lighttpd fails on Buster

Fri Jul 12, 2019 6:50 pm

Pi4 with official power supply.
All OK with default software.

I tried to apt-get lighttpd. Seems to load but there is no index page created as usual and dmesg shows -

/lib/systemd/system/lighttpd.service:6: PIDFile= references path below legacy directory /var/run/, updating /var/run/lighttpd.pid → /run/lighttpd.pid; please update the unit file accordingly.

Tried again on new stable image. Just the same.

All my other Pis run it fine with cgi etc etc.

Please help - I saw some message that seems to indicate it has not been adapted for Pi 4 yet?

It works on Buster on a RPi3B.

Do you get anything in /var/log/lighttpd?
What do you get from sudo /usr/sbin/lighttpd -t -f /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf?

It's fixed in the pi-hole installation, soo you may want to head over to their userspace to find out how.

New start with 2019-07-10-raspbian-buster
Now on a Pi3b
all defaults as per setup screens
no other program loaded

sudo apt-get install lighttpd

Same problems - no index file

Cyberduck as root to see -

/var/log/lighttpd
2019-07-13 20:08:17: (server.c.1464) server started (lighttpd/1.4.53)
2019-07-13 20:09:35: (server.c.2059) server stopped by UID = 0 PID = 1
2019-07-13 20:09:47: (server.c.1464) server started (lighttpd/1.4.53)
2019-07-13 20:19:47: (server.c.2059) server stopped by UID = 0 PID = 1
2019-07-13 20:19:56: (server.c.1464) server started (lighttpd/1.4.53)

dmesg
[ 2.719485] systemd[1]: /lib/systemd/system/lighttpd.service:6: PIDFile= references path below legacy directory /var/run/, updating /var/run/lighttpd.pid → /run/lighttpd.pid; please update the unit file accordingly.

how do I "please update the unit file accordingly." ?

sudo /usr/sbin/lighttpd -t -f /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf
Syntax OK

[email protected]:~ $ lighttpd -v
lighttpd/1.4.53 (ssl) - a light and fast webserver

Thanks

this did it

cd /usr/share/lighttpd/
sudo ln -s create-mime.conf.pl create-mime.assign.pl

You can ignore that pid file problem it's informational only (a deprecation warning for something in Raspbian Bullseye in two year's time).

Next time set some debug logging in /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf

Thanks but for all other Raspbians the supporting apps were worry free.
I guess I bought too early - but who could resist that spec!

lighttpd works fine for me on a RPi 4 with Buster. There shouldn't be anything that was changed on a RPi 4 that would have affected it.

What happens if you run "sudo /usr/sbin/lighttpd -D -f /etc/lighttpd/lighttpd.conf"?
