Is NetBeans best IDE for Pi 4 today or is usable Eclipse too?

Fri Jul 12, 2019 3:56 pm

Or any other IDE variant interesting?

I'm sure Intellij Idea will work. Actually I'm going to install it in a moment and let you know.

Eclipse supplied with Raspbian is 3.8 and I failed to make it work (even if I did I wouldn't call 3.8 usable :( ). NetBeans? No idea - it was slightly ignored and less mainstream IDE (and there are reasons for it in my opinion  )...

Newer Eclipse? Just look next topic here...

Last version looks definitely good:

I am not exactly hardcore compiler!

I noticed your fight elsewhere ;).

Alas there is no J9 JVM for ARM :(.

IntelliJ Idea works quite well. That's currently 'the' IDE for Java and it is working happily on Pi4 :)

When you compare speeds with Eclipse? JDK 12 support is? Is not constant caching on Idea bad for SD?

Speeds - I bet Eclipse is unbeaten in the world of IDEs. All of them. Incremental compiler that IBM brought long time ago from VisualJ is, still, one of the best in the world of compilers. Eclipse 2.0 or 2.1 on 700MHz Celeron with only 128MB of memory (on Windows 98 - on my 2000 laptop) works almost on par with IntelliJ on 3.3GHz i7 with 16GB of memory... So, no comparison there...

Caching? No idea - too much I/O is not good for SD, but doesn't Eclipse doing very similar as well with constant recompilation why you're typing?

JDK 12? I hope so. It would be really odd if they don't as, as I said, they are the top IDE for Java development. They are always one step in front of Eclipse in many things and I can easily bet that they have at least twice as many (if not much more) Java developers than Eclipse :(
Also, it seems more stable and more rounded with more (current, contemporary) frameworks/tools/libraries plug-ins support.

But, I would suggest getting cheap USB3 to SATA adapter and some old, discarded, low capacity SSD of someone (something people throw away these days - for instance, who needs 3+ year old 80GB SSD?) and switch to it with Pi4. It make visible difference for little extra. (something like this for instance https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/USB-3-0-To-C ... 3541113187 or similar)

Go RAD, Lazarus and FPC.
I use the baremetal version Ultibo.
Probably the fastest way I have now for making apps without an OS being needed.

I have not tried Netbeans on a Pi4, but I have used it Windows networked to a Pi.
I used it quite a bit until it went open.
If you like Java, Processing is probably going to be ok now on a Pi4.

Eclipse, yikes but the new Cypress PSoC's use it, so I may have to as well.

Arduino IDE is very good.
The shortest app I every did was with Mathematica.
I still use shell script and Midnight Commander as my IDE, local and remotely

For very simple single file compiles I just use Geany, works for most known languages..

A lot depends on what you want to do.
I have used every method above, as they did what I wanted to do at that time.

I'm still looking for the perfect solution, even to the extent of writing my own scripting OS.

lads,
1. Got already USB 2.0 to SATA/IDE + 200 GB HDD (+ other oldies as backup)
2. How long will take compiling on Pi4? - https://www.eclipse.org/openj9/oj9_buil ... version-12
Not just compiler is supa, also their JDK is best I know: not 300-500 MB as normal but 100-200 + more intelligent GC() - they are definitely not making it up, see some comparisons with HotSpot here: https://www.eclipse.org/openj9/oj9_performance.html
3. Idea is needed for Android developing (knowledge at least - when you are doing Androiding) in a lot work offers so... But HW needed is higher definitely.
4. Works on Eclipse JDK13 and JDK14? Or just with plugins?
5. FPC is nice, elegant but getting slaughtered: https://www.tiobe.com/tiobe-index/

Just Early Access Build

https://jdk.java.net/14/

But Eclipse let me work on JDK12 before it was released...

Hello All,

Built from source, the latest NetBeans daily build, NetBeans 11.1, as of 2019-08-19 seems to work great on the Pi 4 running a clean install of 2019-07-10-raspbian-buster-full.

Environment:
  • javac -version
    javac 11.0.3

    java -version
    openjdk version "11.0.3" 2019-04-16
    OpenJDK Runtime Environment (build 11.0.3+7-post-Raspbian-5)
OpenJDK Server VM (build 11.0.3+7-post-Raspbian-5, mixed mode)

    uname -a
    Linux raspberrypi 4.19.57-v7l+ #1244 SMP Thu Jul 4 18:48:07 BST 2019 armv7l GNU/Linux

    ant -version
    Apache Ant(TM) version 1.10.5 compiled on August 27 2018
The guide to build NetBeans from source is at https://netbeans.apache.org/download/dev/index.html

Notice from the environment above, this was done with the default java/javac, using ant -Dpermit.jdk9.builds=true

It will take approx an hour and a half to do so.

Return to “Java”
