New to Raspberry Pi - What do I need to buy to assemble a decent computer?

Wed Jul 03, 2019 1:53 am

Hi there, everyone. I would like to assemble my own desktop PC using a Raspberry Pi, but I'm not sure what components to start with. I would like the best components available, and OEM if possible. I would like to use a 4GB Raspberry Pi 4 and the official keyboard, mouse, power supply, and case, but what else should I buy? I want the highest capacity Micro SD card that I can get that still runs quickly and without crashing. Does anyone have any advice for me? Thank you in advance :)

I think you will need to buy a good heatsink and fan.

Perhaps the people behind the Raspberry Pi should document what is required to get it started?

Perhaps it would look like this: https://projects.raspberrypi.org/en/pro ... tting-up/2

Many of the ancillaries are indeed available as Raspberry Pi products: https://www.raspberrypi.org/products/

All Raspberry Pi Single Board Computers are computers in their own right, there is nothing to assemble.

You need a good Power Supply to plug in.

You can put them in a case and attach devices, and all can boot from a SD Card.

Make sure you get the "Official Pi4 PSU". These are cheap and well engineered. Do not use a phone charger.

You should get an A1 class micro SD card
These Sandisk ones are popular:-

Assuming they are genuine, any of these cards will work including the 512GB one.
I use 128GB Sandisk A1 cards which are down to £20 now. 64Gb are £12.

The Official keyboard is fine, but it is compact. You may prefer a larger one.

You will need a micro-HDMI to HDMI cable - again, the official one is cheap and works properly.

I would avoid the official case - the Pi4 runs very hot in it and may throttle.
If you must have a case, then look at the FLIRC metal case (or the KODI version). The aluminium construction works as a natural heat sink. Make sure you get the Pi4 version of the case - you may have to wait a little as the Pi4 is very new.
In the mean time, the Pi4 of course runs very happily outside of a case.

Look for A1 performance rated micro SD cards. They are significantly faster than standard Class-10 cars when used as a Raspberry Pi OS drive. The SanDisk Ultra A1 cards are available in capacities up to 512GB now, but the 400GB model offers a much better price-per-GB.
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

A decent desktop PC needs a SSD ;) (about 25 bucks with SATA - USB 3.0 adapter)

But you do not need one to use your computer. I really like and recommend the official power supply (EU in my case) and the official mouse and keyboard.
