Max SD card size on Raspberry Pi 4

Mon Jul 01, 2019 3:17 pm

Hello all,
does anybody know what the official/unofficial max SD card size for a Raspberry Pi 4 B is? I've got a Pi 2 B running with a 64GB card, but couldn't get a Pi 3 B to book off a 128GB card.
Any thoughts?

I believe all Raspberry Pi computers with micro SD slots support the SDXC standard, which is cards up to 2TB capacity (although there are no cards that large available yet).

I have booted my Pi 3B from a 128GB card, so I'm not sure why you couldn't.
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

All genuine cards - SanDisk from Amazon. Will try the 128 GB card again.

Many thanks for the replies!

Buying from Amazon is not a guarantee of genuine (I've heard they mix inventory with their 3rd party sellers who stock in Amazon warehouses). Although I usually buy mine there as well.

Test the card with a tool like F3, ChkFlsh or H2TestW.

128GB is working just fine for me on both 3B+ and 4B.

I used Etcher to write Buster to a 128gb Samsung EVO Select card. My Pi 3B v1.2 reports 118G Total, 5.96G Used, and 107G Available or 6% used. I have a Pi 4 4gb on order, so I am anxious to try this card in that when I get it.

Hi,
on a similar search i found that the RPi BL might support only certain Fileformats on the SDCard.
Maybe you need to format it to FAT32 and reflash it.

To answer the question about certain cards not booting - I can offer an additional data point:

Cheap, odd-ball cards are likely to fail, regardless of alleged speed or size. Additionally I have heard that the Pi-3, (and presumably the Pi-4 as well), is particularly allergic to crummy SD cards, refusing to boot if the card is at all questionable.

In my case I had, (unknowingly), bought several 16 and 32 gig no-name/bizarro named Chinese knock-offs, (probably "ghost-shift" devices), from a large "super-store", (гипермаркет), in Eastern Europe. Though all appear to be fine, the Pi-3 refused to boot from them.

Other cards, from reputable vendors, worked well.

Unfortunately, even some so-called "reputable" brands have their dodgy underbelly. One particularly notorious example was where Kingston suppliers were caught shipping counterfeit cards as genuine.

To be fair, some of the suppliers had no idea that they were being scammed though others were well aware of the fact that they were deliberately selling bogus cards.

I, myself, have had trouble in the past with Kingston branded memory/flash cards, so I avoid them as much as possible.

What say ye?

It sounds like the card was flashed incorrectly. Did you try re-flashing it?

  • This post is over a year old and still getting useful additions
  • This poster "solved" his problem by using a different SD card, albeit smaller. SD cards, especially very large ones, can fail. Maybe he got a bogus card. (Counterfeit/defective?) Maybe he just had a bad flash - it happens to everyone at one time or another.
  • Hopefully someone else, who is experiencing this problem can benefit from other's contributions.
