Buster won't boot headless with the Sense Hat attached

Hello all,

I have a raspberry Pi 3B+ with a sense hat attached. I installed buster on a new card (enabled ssh) and it boots up with no problems if it is attached to a display. When I try to boot headlessly the Hat just lights up the rainbow and stays that way. The Pi does not seem to boot up. With the Hat off it boots headlessly and is accessible via ssh.

I have repeated this with a second sd card and on the Pi 3B+ and 2B. I have tried disabling the splash screen and graphical boot to no avail.

How can I fix this? Thanks.

I have RPI 4 and have the same problem with Sense Hat. I spent hours on it.
Why there is no testing before launch?

Same thing here - I'm using a RPi 3B+ with a SenseHat attached. It won't boot Buster in headless mode, it'll only boot with a display connected. Also tried disabling splash screen and using the legacy OpenGL driver, to no avail - the Sense LED Matrix stays lit up, just like it would if I would not have any SD card inserted.

This is really annoying, I'm hoping a future packaging of Buster will fix this.

Exactly same issue with the first (single-core) Raspberry PI, flashed SD card with Buster Lite, created ssh in boot and not able to login with ssh: connection refused.

Which sounds like a completely different issue. If the Pi hadn't booted you would get "No route to host", not "Connection refused". That sounds more like the Pi has booted and got stuck - or ssh isn't enabled for some reason.

Do you have a Sense HAT attached to the Pi?

Same problem here: buster does not start with sensehat and no hdmi monitor.

The sensehat shows the colored startup image forever and I can't connect with ssh.

Setup: Raspberry 3 and a recent sensehat

A previous version of Raspbian starts without a hitch.

I had the same problem with buster RPi 4B. Doing:

$raspi-config
7 Advanced Options
A5 Resolution
DMT Mode 4 640x480 60Hz 4:3

solves the problem. Tested with:
- RPi4B
- 2019-07-10-raspbian-buster
- 2019-07-10-raspbian-buster-lite

I just updated to Buster with the SenseHat. Tried this resolution fix, still not display. Is there any other fix out there?

Hi all,
same problem here with a Raspberry Pi 4 and a Sense HAT. I am using the latest buster image "2019-07-10-raspbian-buster-full.img".

My solution was to edit the /boot/config.txt.
I removed the "#" in front of the line "hdmi_force_hotplug=1" and now the Raspberry Pi is booting attached with the SenseHAT.

Hi, I tried all posted remedies (setting screen size in raspi-config and changing changing config.txt) yet to no avail (tried all the usual checks like I2C turned on etc)

Using RPi3 B+ and Sense Hat.

The boot process gets stuck with the rainbow color pattern on the Sense Hat.

I tried two different Pi's and two different Sense Hats.

Same problem.

Any further ideas?

[SOLVED for me]

I had set-up the Pi with a WaveShare TFT display. I started from a fresh build without installing the touch screen drivers or setting the screen display ratio.

When using the previous Raspbian version it works now. Will try with Buster maybe later and see if that works also.
