Running Rpi as a FTP server

I am getting a Rasberry Pi for chirstmas and was thinking of some projects that I could possibly do with this little machine. I was wondering if i could set it up as a media server so that i could access my movies remotely through SSH/FTP off of a External Hard Drive plugged into the USB drive. Is this possible?

I don't see why not. The usb support is a bit iffy for some devices (e.g. my logitech web cam refuses to work on the Pi) but I don't think usb connected drives have that problem.

my harddrive is a usb 2.0 so it seems standard hopefully it does not cause any problems
