Are 52° celsius safe for RB3 too keep it work forever?

Fri May 03, 2019 5:37 pm

Hi mates, I?m using RB3 only for Node Red and Teamviewer (no USB attached, 5,15 volt power), usually the load is very low, maybe 2 to 5%, I've tried to open some holes in the cover so I lower from 59° to 52° now. Is it to consider safe temperature to a long life?

I don't want to add a fan cause in the long run it just make the things worst because of the dust, so I searched for some passive coolers and it seems there are available only small ones, are them worth? maybe some degrees less with such low cpu usage, what is your experience about it? Do you have some other suggestions? Thanks

Anything less than 85°C is OK. You may not need heatsinks or fans if it only gets to 52°C.

Best passive cooling system is the very pretty FLIRC case.

Thank you for your kind answer!
yes the case looks really good, my problem is almost the GPIO flat cable, but I guess it's possible to manage it.
Anyway if you tell me that with 52° will not suffer of unstability or premature dead.. I can also leave it like that..

May someone report how long they keep having RB working at this temperature without problems?
Thank you

How do you measure the temp?
its usually done with:

Code: Select all

vcgencmd measure_temp
52C is fine and your Pi will last for decades.

I prefer the Argon One Raspberry Pi Case. Although it has a fan this can be turned off via a configuration script. Easy access to GPIO's via a removable cover, ON/Off/Reset switch, all ports redirected to the rear of the unit, access to SD slot and viewable power activity LEDs at front. The case is also a passive cooler so no need to worry about disabling the fan.
