A writing on the development of mathematical systems

Thu Mar 28, 2019 1:45 pm

Hello! There will soon be an exhibition on Mathematics and I was asked to write an essay on the development of mathematical systems. Perhaps you know good sources, or you can tell interesting facts. Thanks! :D

Quite what do you mean by "Mathematical systems"? It seems such a broad subject - could you narrow it down somewhat?

Probably you want something about the history of computer algebra systems. The main softwares I know of are

MIT -> Macsyma -> Maxima

IBM -> Scratch Pad -> Axiom -> FriCAS

U Paderborn -> MuPad -> MATLAB symbolic toolbox

Stanford -> Reduce

U Waterloo -> Maple -> MapleSoft

Wolfram -> Mathematica

Each of these likely has a Wikipedia entry. There may be other softwares as well. Parallel with the development of computer algebra software is the development of the algorithms behind symbolic computation such as the Risch–Bronstein–Trager algorithm for finding anti-derivatives. More information about the theoretical side may be found in the research library at your local university.

In the DOS days there also was the ingenious "Derive", which used amazingly few resources and probably would fly on the Pi.

Amazingly there still seems to be an active Derive users group at

http://www.austromath.at/dug/

The newsletters contain some good examples of computer algebra intended for classroom use that could easily be adapted for Mathematica on the Pi.

Essays on math topics are always difficult. First, it is necessary to specify the topic. This will help to get a better result. What kind of essay do you want (I mean the volume and details of the study)?
Welcome to the forum!

The Mathematica section is relatively low volume so many of the threads on the first page are quite old. I've been thinking of starting a new thread about using Mathematica as a programming language. Have you written any scripts or computations with Mathematica?

Since the Mathematica package hasn't (fundamentally) changed since it was released that old stuff in this section is probably perfectly valid. At fewer than one posting per month it's not exactly popular.
Note: Any requirement to use a crystal ball or mind reading will result in me ignoring your question.

Criticising any questions is banned on this forum.

Any DMs sent on Twitter will be answered next month.

I suspect it is very popular for students and in schools just not with the people posting here.
