raspbmc : /home/pi shows as empty?

Thu Nov 22, 2012 6:29 pm

I suspect I'm missing something really basic here! Noob

As a test, I have copied a couple of films and an mp3 to the /home/pi folder which are visible via ssh and ftp.
I can't see anything in the folder at all when accessing via raspbmc. Never mind test them. I don't yet have mpeg codec, but I imagined I would still be able to see the file if not play it? This wouldn't explain not being able to see the mp3 anyway?

Doubt this is relevant, but I can access YouTube and bbc iplayer

Help, please?

Can nobody offer any help here?

I'm convinced I'm doing something fundamentally wrong, but I have no idea... :?

Edit : I'll be using a USB drive for media eventually, it's taking a while for the case to arrive from china. This is just a proof of concept really.

One final thing, when I installed BBC iPlayer, the installation files were also saved into /home/pi and these were visible.
Which suggests to me that it's not some weird permissions issue.

Can nobody help? Am stuck.

I can be more specific later when I get home, but when I run ls (what does the -la do btw?) it shows an mp3 file, a couple of avi's and the iplayer/4OD installers.

The 'l' prints out the long format rather than just the names, and the 'a' includes entries that start with a '.'

Hidden files and folders begin with '.' ls -la will show everything including date, ownership and read/write/execute permissions for current account, group accounts and all users.

cd = change directory (in Windows terminology that would be open folder).
If you really want to have a look around the file system I would suggest you try WinSCP - http://winscp.net/eng/index.php
Or alternatively browse via your memory card reader using DiskInternals Linux Reader - http://www.diskinternals.com/linux-reader/

Any ideas why I can't see any media then?

Or do I try another distro?

I was quite right :o

Such as a simple thing to miss, I was trying to open an individual file, not add the folder as a video source.

All test files work perfectly well now!!

Hi guys,
I'm facing the exact same issue, but I haven't understand the reason/solution yet, so if you can help....:)

What I did:
- ssh into the raspberry (with pi/raspberry credentials)
- copied a .avi file into the home folder (the file name contains spaces...shouldn't be a problem I guess)
- disconnect from ssh
- from the raspbmc, I go into Videos > File > the list is empty
- I tried to go into Settings > Videos but it's not clear if the home folder is already a place the raspbmc looks at to find playable files, or how/if I should register it

any clue??
Thanks!

Videos>add source >browse to the FOLDER that contains videos and click on ok, then you should be able to see the folder containing videos when you select Videos from the main screen. You can right click or "C" to get a context menu to specify type of content and to scan folder to library

My question for Raspbmc and maybe this is someone elses question too... is,

When trying to add multiple video sources I can't navigate beyond /home/pi through the XBMC interface. Yes, I can do it via SSH. But I am trying to add some video sources from plugins. Instead of changing all the plugins to point to my /home/pi/movies folder that I had to make because I cannot navigate to these plugin folders because .xbmc folder is hidden. Is there a toggle to show hidden folders to make browsing to such video sources doable?

If you mean in the XBMC interface: go to System / Settings / Appearance / File lists and choose 'Show hidden files and directories'.

If you want to see them on the command line: you can use e.g. 'ls -a' to see them.
