Why this... (RPi3B+ IP Address) at (incomplete) on en1 ifscope [ethernet]

Tue Feb 19, 2019 8:58 pm

Hi All

Not sure I understand what is going on on my network. The IP address of my RPi has not changed, and having just rebooted it, I see the IP address shown in the VNC window as it has always been. When I try to connect to this via SSH on the Mac, I get nothing.

When running the following command...I get

Code: Select all

arp -a
gives the following output...

Code: Select all

(IP removed) at (incomplete) on en1 ifscope [ethernet]
Why is this please? when I see the IP address of the RPi on the RPi. Also, I am on the same network.

So are you saying you can connect via VNC to the pi IP address as normal but you can SSH in to the pi using the same IP.

what happens if you try to ping the pi from your mac ?

When strange things start happening on a network and assuming you have made no changes to the router or attached devices, I find a good starting point is to power off the router and any PC's or PI's connected to , then after 60 seconds or so, then power the router back on and once it has finished its start up cycle power on PC's & Pi's being aware that IP's for devices may have changed.

Thanks for the reply Bob.

No, I wasn't able to VNC into the RPi from the Mac, but on the RPi I opened the VNC panel and I could see the IP address, which was the same as it has always been. I could see that IP address when I did arp - a, but it was listed as (incomplete), something which I haven't seen before.

I think I found what may have been causing the issue, though again I haven't experienced this before despite set up and connections been done this way many times previously.

I don't have a home wifi service, for several reasons... one of which is as the plan I have from my mobile provider is simply superb (consistent 40MBPS 4G on speedtest.net) and the fact I live on my own so don't need one. Hence my home wifi is provided by a hotspot on my phone. I never had any speed issues despite watching Apple TV, YouTube, Netflix and general browsing etc. Why the following fixed the issue I have no idea, but I was connected to RPi and Mac via the same hotspot as I always do, but the USB cable was also plugged in. Now... if I don't select the hotspot for the WiFi connection on the Mac, it will connect through the USB port to the phone, and out to the net etc.

When I unplugged the USB cable, restarted hotspot - all worked fine. So, I have no idea what conflict was being caused, but I think there may have been one with the USB cable plugged in (for charging).
