RPi3B plus Dell P2016 20" monitor - cannot get display to work!

Thu Feb 14, 2019 2:08 pm

Hi All

OK, so I have a Dell P2016 20" monitor https://www.dell.com/ed/business/p/dell-p2016/pd and I just can't seem to get it to work with my RPi.

I bought a UGREEN 1080P Active HDMI to VGA Converter with power cable - and despite my best efforts I cannot seem to get the monitor displaying anything from the RPi.

I have connected the monitor to my Mac via Mini DP, and all works fine.

As a guess... are there any settings in the RPi config files that need changing? All suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

The RPi defaults to HDMI, but I think I just plug my VGA/XGA monitors in, & they get used OK.
The specs for that monitor says it has HDMI, might be worth getting a cable & trying it.
If you do use a VGA converter, you will need to redirect your sound output (to the 3.5mm jack).
(Make sure you turn on the monitor before starting the RPi.)

Edit: This is the VGA adapter that I used - https://thepihut.com/collections/raspbe ... -convertor

Hi k-pi

Alas, my model doesn't have a HDMI port, but does have a Display Port. I have tested the monitor on my Mac, and it gives an excellent image using that. I chose to get a VGA converter instead of a DP converter due to price. Think I am going to give up on using this one!

Ah well... :)

Yep, I spotted one of those on Amazon when I ordered the UGREEN one yesterday, wish I had ordered that one now. Have to go through the returns process with Amazon... never an enjoyable thing, meh!

It might be worthwhile to hunt around to see if you can find a monitor with HDMI or DVI input and skip the VGA converter. Might even cost less than a decent converter.

Yes, I think you are right!

This particular set up was for the 2nd RPi I have which I was hoping to set up downstairs. Have a decent 24" monitor for the main RPi in my study that I may swap for downstairs and use my Mac in VNC Viewer to access the one upstairs.
