Dotstar Led Raspberry PI

Hi!
I'm trying to wire my dotstar 60 led per meter in to my raspberry pi 3. I don't think I've got the cables right, becasue my raspberry pi got very warm when i hooked it up, and the leds did not light up. I've got the 2 additional cables from the led light hooked up to an additional power supply of 5v.
I've provided some pictures of my setup.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

You need to show how your Pi is connected to the LED string and the additional power supply.

Additional photos or maybe draw a wiring diagram?

Does your Pi still work with everything disconnected from the GPIO?

Here's the adapter. Perhaps it is too weak?

And here's the wiring to my Raspberry pi. The red cable is connected to 5v, black to ground. Yellow (data in) to mosi and clock in to SLCK

Oh, and here is the jump cables i use between the led strip and raspberry! Male to female.

The recommended power supply for the Pi3 on its own is 2.5 Amps !

Adafruit recommends 60 milliamps per led at full brightness.

Pi = 2.5 Amps
1 Meter 60 leds * 0.06Amps = 3.6Amps
Total = 6.1Amps

How many meters of LEDs have you got?

I would also suggest not powering the LEDs from the 5V pin on the Pi but direct from the power supply (common grounds needed) similar to this for a different board. https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-dot ... ons#step-6 You may kill your Pi with that much current through it !

Your dotstar leds may also not work correctly on the Pi's 3.3V logic!

Also, should i line the DC, CI and ground into pi? And 5v + ground to power supply?
