Windows 10 IoT Core on Raspberry Pi 3 A+ does not boot?

Hello to everyone,

please have somebody experience with Windows 10 IoT Core on new model RPi 3A+ ?
I spend a lot of time with testing more versions of Windows and forums browsing to this issue, but without satisfaction. It seems, that Microsoft is not ready yet. What is mentioned is only Model 3B+ with Preview version, that is all

What RPi 3A+ does with Windows 10 IoT Core:
-Start with rainbow screen, nothing else. RED led is on (power), GREEN led (SD card activity) is all time off.

I have tested this versions of Windows (loaded with IoT Core Dashboard):
-Windows Insider Preview 17744 (downloaded automatically with IoT Core Dashboard from internet)
-Windows10_InsiderPreview_IoTCore_RPi3B_en-us_17661 (FFU file)
-Windows10_IoTCore_RPi_ARM32_en-us_17763Oct (FFU file)
-17763.107.181026-1406.rs5_release_svc_prod2_amd64fre_IOTCORE_RPi (FFU file)

Next knowledge:
-SD card was 16 GB original NOOBS, Class 10. When I put in, Raspbian starts without problems. Than I deleted this card and use for Windows flash. Power supply original 5V 3,5A. Nothing connected to ports and USB, only HDMI monitor. We can exclude HW problems.
-I played with confix.txt in Windows boot directory, but without success. I changed parameters like kernel.. and .._freq, see attachements.
-But what is interesting, that system reads this confix.txt file, because it react e.g. on disable_splash parameter. When I set disable_splash=1, than it starts without rainbow screen, only black without HDMI signal.

I am very grateful for every info and experience...

I suspect the 3A+ is not yet supported by the Win10 IoT Core image. The splash screen is generated by the early bootloader files, which also read the config.txt. The rainbow screen is typical of running old code against a newer system on the Pi.

I do have the same issue with the RPi 3 A+, also I tried with RPi 3 Zero W without success, It works smoothly with Raspbian as well.
Please let me know if any progress on this.
The Microsoft post says that probably is the minimum RAM required but this RPi 3 A+ has 512MB which meets the requirements so it doesn't make sense.

Windows 10 IoT lists the minimum memory requirements as 512MB available to the OS with video support. As videocore takes some RAM you will never have that much RAM available on the Raspberry Pi 3A+. At least 64MB goes to the VideoCore IV graphics processor, leaving 448MB or less for Windows 10 IoT, that does not meet the minimum requirements.

I dont think the memory is the issue. It is was it would still boot past the rainbow screen, then fail later on or at least check memory and throw error. I also got a rainbow screen when booting IOT from a 3B+. Same card boots fine on a 3B. I will try a 3A+ later this week once it ships.

by the way Win 10 IOT is very laggy on my 3B and i dont think I will be playing with it very long.

The 3B+, and probably when supported the 3A+, needs the latest Insider Preview Release, you need to have a Microsoft Account to access the download:

Thanks for the reply. As you replied, I saw that i needed the insider preview, i then tried 17744 and it also did not boot. I will try 17733 later today.

also will try 17661 tech preview. This isnt listed on the IOT dashboard.

17661 does boot on the 3B+

There are some known issues in this Insider Preview image. Please note that:

**Onboard Wi-Fi and Bluetooth do not work on the Raspberry Pi 3B+.

Win 10 is super slow on 3B and not really supported on 3B+ so "right click - delete" to win10 IOT
