Samba share without SMB1 on Windows 10

Tue Jan 08, 2019 8:23 pm

Hi

I created a share with sambe for my Windows 10 desktop.

At first I couldn't find the share in file explorer. Then I read that I cant find it because Windows 10 disabled SMB1. By entering the IP of my Pi I could access the share and create a shortcut of it.

My question is the following. What protocol is being used the way my share is set up now? My gues is that SMB1 is not used because it is still disabled by Windwos. I didnt change that.

The reason I'm asking is because I've read that some people force Samba to use SMB2 or higher by editing its .conf file and I'm not sure if that is 100% necessary.

Thanks.

Samba, like Windows, negotiates the protocol, so if your Windows machine isn't using SMBv1, then Samba will not be using it. You will probably be using SMBv3 as this is the default for Windows 10.
