How to watch video?

Sat Nov 17, 2012 12:37 am

I've got my Pi running with Wheezy Raspian and a GUI using LXDE (Lightweight Desktop Environment) and Midori (Internet Browser). I don't seem to have any video capability with this setup. When I try to view any video content, I get an error message something to the effect of "You need Adobe Flash Player to view this video...". I've tried downloading Adobe Flash Player but have not had any success with that.
What am I doing wrong? Is there a video player more compatible with Linux?

I wouldn't waste your time with Adobe Flash Player on the PI it won't work because there's no official support for the ARMv6 processor nor is there any browser for the PI with HTML5 support either.
If you want to watch sites like YouTube then you need XMBC (as distros OpenELEC, Xbian or Raspbmc) i.e. http://sparky0815.de/openelec-download- ... fat-files/

As for Raspbian it comes pre-installed with a video player called omxplayer you only have to enter the command from your console / terminal window.
Just be aware the PI is limited to the playback of video codec h.264 commonly used for flv and mp4 files, additional codec support for mpeg-2 and vc-1 can be added by purchasing appropriate playback licenses from the web site.
