How to configure Pi 3 B+ as bluetooth audio transmitter?

Sat Dec 22, 2018 5:51 pm

Hello all,

I'm trying to configure a 3B+ to connect to bluetooth headphones and output audio from from my cable box via a USB sound card.

The first problem I'm having is getting the bluetooth working with a receiver. (The headphones are on order so I'm using a speaker while I work out the bugs)

The speaker plays audio from my phone just fine, but when I pair it with my Pi there's no audio (Aside from its initial 'connected' sound)

I tried using this guide but it didn't help: https://www.sigmdel.ca/michel/ha/rpi/bl ... 02_en.html

Seemed thorough enough, any ideas on what else I can try?

Hi Flare,

At what point in the guide linked to did your experience differ from that of the author?

What error or lack of output did you experience?

Did you also start with a fresh install of the OS?

Sadly, I do not recall much of my experience with that attempt, I spent most of the night starting over fresh with this guide:

https://blog.bluetooth.com/bluez-on-raspberry-pi-update

That one involved recompiling the kernel, and it's still not working. >_<

Since then I've narrowed down three things I believe I need: Bluez 5.50, PulseAudio, and Pulseaudio_module_bluetooth to make the first two communicate together.

In Pulse's Volume Control program, I can see the paired speaker's supposed levels from a song playing in VLC, but I still don't hear anything from the speaker.

I'm willing to start over form another fresh install if you know a working method.

Update: I tried using ALSA again, and the default configuration plays VLC intermittently on my speaker with a fresh install.

What can I do to make it work better?
