Some questions

Sat Nov 24, 2018 7:12 pm

I was looking on amazon.co.uk today and decided to have a look at what "Raspberry Pi" sells. I found some interesting things:

A new RPi B+ for $66.68? https://www.amazon.co.uk/RASPBERRY-BOAR ... 81&sr=8-33

Expansion module from 2010? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-r ... 21&sr=8-39

Raspberry Pi S? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-S ... 21&sr=8-48

Raspberry Pi s battery: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-s ... 10&sr=8-49

Blue Pi 3 for sale: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-S ... 10&sr=8-50

$100 RPi B: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Raspberry-Pi-M ... 10&sr=8-62

Another RPi B for $50: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Sparepart-Rasp ... 0&sr=8-109

Why are all of these so expensive?
1 * Raspberry Pi Zero W, 1 * Raspberry Pi 2, 1 * Raspberry Pi 3 1 * Raspberry Pi 3B +

Because...Amazon.

As the famous P. T. Barnum said: "There's a sucker born every minute".

Except he may never have said that. True none the less.

Most of that junk is not from the Pi Foundation or any authorized distributor.

You need to get out more in the real world and find yourself a hobby.

Because you cherry-picked them?

There is one interesting case I think: the blue Pi3, IIRC it is the one that comes out of the Brazilian production unit and it is not meant to be distributed in Europe. If I am right, and the offer is genuine, this is a case of grey market importing. Small quantities, probably some legal risks... Assuming the product is really a "blue Pi", that could explain the price.

There might be a few of these that are legitimate "new old stock" products waiting for a desperate (industrial) customer looking for a replacement part. Keeping items in inventory has a cost, and rare buyers might see a value even superior to that cost.

The last and most probable cause is errant references in sellers catalogs. Forgotten references that get automatic price bumps, and nobody ever cares. Or spamming sellers who want to make their storefront much larger than their stockroom. For these, if you try to buy, the product will turn out to be unfortunately unavailable.

In any case, do not buy...

(and yes of course "From Raspberry Pi" (with spelling variations) on Amazon doesn't mean anything. It's just a keyword/referencing game vendors play)

Just buy a Raspberry Pi from one of the authorized vendors, do not try to use Amazon.

Sometimes sellers will leave items on site at an inflated prices for SEO and search results till stock comes back in and then the prices drop.

An old trick on eBay using the free renewal offers and then drop the price saving time recreating the advert and paying eBay for a new listing.
