Hi, welcome to the forums.

The Raspberry Pi usually runs one of the various distributions of Linux, most commonly Debian Wheezy with the LXDE Graphic User Interface (GUI).

I do not know how well LXDE works with keyboard navigation only. I do think it requires a mouse. If you are good at linux, you could probably find a GUI that worked well without a mouse.

If you are going to do nothing but use a command line interface via a terminal or ssh, you can live without a mouse.

The cheapest usb mouse works fine. You can probably get one at a second hand store for a dollar/pound/euro/franc/etc so I would suggest getting one even if you do not plan to use it.

Cheers.

Working via ssh (headless) you don't need a keyboard (or a monitor) either.
Don't judge Linux by the Pi.......

There's only really a need for a mouse if the software you're using needs one. There even exist keyboard-driven window managers for X, but it's perfectly possible to use the pi mouseless without X (or, as pluggy says, with nothing more than a power supply and ethernet cable, although in that case you do need another computer)
