Chromium OS 70?

Sun Nov 11, 2018 10:10 am

I was wondering if it is possible to run Chromium OS on the Raspberry Pi 3. After some research, I found a link to a Sourceforge repository, but that hasn't been updated since 2016. Does anyone know how to get the latest Chromium OS (version 70) on the Raspberry Pi 3?

Not possible.

You can run the Chromium browser on Raspbian.

The version of Chromium available in the Raspbian repositories is five versions out of date. The Ubuntu ARMHF repositories have the current version, 70.

Chromium OS would run quite smoothly on the Raspberry Pi 3, since it isn't very demanding on resources.

I'm aware that Debian has newer Chromium builds, but not Raspbian. I've actually tried downloading the Chromium deb directly from Debian to install on Raspbian, but got a bunch of dependency errors while trying to install. Running sudo apt install -f didn't attempt to correct the dependencies but rather just removed the Chromium package from my Pi.

You can add the Debian repo to your sources.list and set a preference to pin it to low priority. This mean that packages will normally be pulled in from Raspbian unless you specify the Debian repo on the apt command (apt -t buster install chromium, or whatever the package is called). That will pull in depends from the Raspbian repo as required. I'd be careful when doing this and never use the "-y" option in conjunction with "-t reponame", so I can see what is going to be installed and anticipate any problems.

I just found out that Chromium has been released as a snap, and Ubuntu Core is based on snaps, so maybe I could try installing the snap version of Chromium on that?

Regards ChromiumOS there were 2 active versions suitable for the RPi 2B/3B:

Chromium OS for SBC which last released a version in 2016 and now appears dead as a dodo.

FlintOS which last released a version in 2017, subsequently were taken over by NeverWare so no further development.

Therefore as ChromiumOS is open source suggest to roll your own ;)

That installed smoothly for me and delivered a reasonable enough experience on my Pi 3B.

Another "not possible" bites the dust.

You were the same person who said that running x86 software on ARM is not possible. Yet here we are, with ExaGear Desktop, Pi386, and Windows 10 WoA (with the Win32 emulator).

I've heard people say "the sky's the limits" with the RPi before, so you can do anything with your Pi.

If you can get Chrome OS 70 running in the Pi, you might want to give this a try...

https://liliputing.com...chromefy-turns-any-pc-into-a-chromebook.html

Turns Chromium OS into (Google) Chrome OS.

Supposedly, anyway, I haven't tried it myself (I have an actual Chromebook).
My mind is like a browser. 27 tabs are open, 9 aren't responding,
lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

Can this version of Chromium OS run Windows and Android apps like the PC version of FydeOS does? Of course, there would have to be some sort of CPU emulation involved for the Windows apps, but I saw that the Windows version of Office 365 could run on FydeOS.

Still a noob. I can't get this to run correctly. On pi3 b+ when I try to boot I get the rainbow screen, then I hear a boot type noise followed by a mostly white screen with what looks like stretched out and tilted little bits of text or code. The mouse cursor shows up and will move around. Just can't get a clear picture. I don't think it's the hdmi cable.

They say its beta code that (tries to) use hardware acceleration, so teething troubles are to be expected.

probably with another resolution/monitor it works.

Low and behold it worked with a different TV. Wish I would have tried that before i spent hours redownloading, reflashing, downloading the new Etcher, etc. Now to figure out if I can get it to play nice with that problem TV
