SSH over USB with Raspberry Pi 3B?

Thu Sep 27, 2018 7:16 pm

I want to control my headless Raspberry Pi 3B via a USB cable connection to my PC. I know how to do this (and it works really well) for the Pi Zero W, but following the same instructions for the 3B doesn't work.

USB requires a Host / Client relationship.

The RPi Zero can run in either Host or Client (on the go / gadget mode)

The RPi 3B can like your PC can only be a USB Host, therefore what you wish to achieve is not feasible....

....unless you use a USBNET Cable:

Hi,

Shall You share the steps required for communicating Raspberry Pi 3 B+ with an Ubuntu Laptop, through SSH, with USBNET cable?
I think USBNET cable need to be connected to one of the USB Host ports of Raspberry Pi 3 B+(not in USB slave port). Right?

Neither RPi3B nor RPi3B+ has a USB slave port. Only host ports.

Correct. But a "UBSNET" cable (i.e. one designed to connect two USB hosts via a fake ethernet link) should make that a moot point.

Unfortunately I don't have one so can help directly.

If the "USBNET" cable present to each end as an ethernet devicve it should be just a matter of configuring the interfaces apropriately.
