Upper half of the digitizer is not working [NOOB edition]

Thu Sep 27, 2018 6:45 pm

Hello Guys;

I am using my;

Raspberry Pi3b
Raspberry Pi 7" Touch Screen
Raspberry PI V2.1 Camera for Octopi and Octopi only, I have limited understanding of the Raspberry Pi and its basics.

Right now, I can only use the bottom half of the screen as a touchscreen, upper half is not responding in any way.

I read all the related topics and I guess I need to re-calibrate my screen via xinput_calibrator and save the calibration data somewhere;

https://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/q ... rry-pi-2-b

I already;

[*]check the cables, cleaned them
[*]sudo apt-get update
[*]sudo apt-get upgrade
[*]Disabled "Advance Options" -. "Overscan" in raspi-config.
[*] I guess I also installed xinput_calibrator but I couldn't run it

Thanks in advance

I just did a fresh install of a NOOBS and screen acts same.

Also yesterday I realized that there is a column on the left side of the screen which is still working and screen is not split to responsive and non responsive parts by a horizontal line but via a complex curve.

You've got a hardware problem. Nothing to do with the software or kernel or ft5406 driver you're running.

my best guess is that moisture got into the touch sense foil over the display.

Greetings,

I have the exact same symptoms ever since updating Jessie on my languishing rpi. Stopped working the moment after post-update rebooting.

One way to confirm it isnt a hardware issue is to include the command lcd_rotate=2 in your config.txt file.

In my case, and I presume in yours, the affected half of the screen will rotate as well. This means it must be a software / formware issue. I found a few other relevant topics when I first started looking into this a month or so ago and will post the links when I find them. Some of the users report these fixes working while they do not work for others (including me :( ).

I’m surprised there aren’t more people with this problem, but the affected group sure would appreciate a fix.

I’ve even tried Fresh installs via noobs to no avail. My solution is a not working touchscreen and check back here periodically praying for a new/revived thread on this topic.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

OK, that's wierd!

If you can give us any information about the versions of update you did... We'll see if we can reproduce, but it sounds like it is some combination of software and hardware problem.

cat /etc/os-release yields:

PRETTY NAME="Raspbian GNU/Linux 9 (stretch)"
VERSION_ID="9"
VERSION="9 (stretch)"
ID=raspbian
ID_LIKE=debian

rpi 3 Model B v1.2

The screen went from working to being unresponsive on the lower portion of the screen (or upper, depending on lcd_rotate) after a sudo apt-get update on/around June of this year (which was executed from a terminal session on the device itself, so i know the screen was working).

I believe the prior version of raspbian which the monitor worked with was installed via noobs 2.3 (i think this image, but don't know for certain
http://downloads.raspberrypi.org/NOOBS/ ... 017-03-03/)

Please let me know if i can provide any additional information. Thanks!

Here’s a related thread that had some good info. I think one thing that isn’t clear to me is how the different places where you can adjust resolution and calibration “play” together, and which gets priority. But no matter what I change I don’t see any effect on how much of the screen is responsive.

When I get some free time, I am going to try to roll back to an earlier version of Jessie to see if that solves it for sure.

I'm using the LCD/touchscreen with the latest kernel and firmware and are not seeing any issues.

Anything unusual in your setup?

Can you look at thechip on the ribbon cable between the display PB and the LCD itself,and tell me what the chip ID is?

It will be something like FT56xxxxx.

I'm taking a look at this issue to see if I can replicate it, but would be useful to know exactly which touchscreen driver chip you have.

Thanks

OK, so been playing with this, and have not been able to replicate the issue.

Tried with a 2017 version of NOBS which I then did a sudo apt update/upgrade on, and all worked fine.

Then did the same with the latest NOOBS, and that also worked fine.

Not sure what to suggest, unless more information comes from the posters above.

Thanks for looking into it -- the plot thickens! I also tried to revert to an old version of Raspbian via NOOBS and it did not begin working again.

One additional observation -- the calibration is SPOT ON for the portion of the screen that is working which makes me suspect . What controls the first indexing of the touch with the
Is there a chance that software and/or hardware issue could cause all negative pixel coordinates not to be registered, even when attempting to run a calibration w/ xinput?

The chip was a little tough to read but i think it says:
FT5406DQ
LR13117

Can you email [email protected] and mention we asked you to for the attention of JamesH, it'd be good to get it back here and test directly...

Just wanted to check in. I am having the same exact issue it appears. Brand new 7" Pi Touchscreen with Pi3.5 and the top half fails to respond to touch. Same curved line as the reported issue above it seems too.

Yes, just waiting for jamesh to test it and then we should be able to diagnose what has gone wrong...

Soon as I am back in office will test. Unfortunately I appear to have TB or some other sort of man flu. Hopefully back to work tomorrow, in shiny new office.

Thanks!

Just to say that I have confirmed this is definitely not you, there appears to be something wrong at about v-pixel 185. We are planning to send it back to the supplier as they are the experts in disasembly, to see what the specific problem is. I've asked for a replacement board to be sent to you, plus some goodies as thanks for sending it to us. Not sure what the schedule is on that, going to be the New Year as office now closed.

Sorry for the slow reply-- i received the package which prompted me to log in and check this page. I'm relieved to hear it wasn't something i did and i'm glad i could contribute some small piece back to the rPi community. Looking forward to hearing the root cause if you're able to share it down the road.

Thanks again!

Just an update on this.

The factory disassembled the display, and found a broken track. The conclusion reached, since the display worked OK from the factory, is that it has suffered an electrostatic discharge event which zapped the track.

Recomendation from the factory - ensure correct ESD precautions are followed.
