Tennis ball machine parts review

Wed Sep 26, 2018 10:59 pm

Hi,
I am making a tennis ball machine, and I've compiled a list of parts that I thought were good for the job. I am fairly new to this, so it is entirely possible that I might have overlooked something very obvious, and made a fatal mistake. Cos its my first project of this kind, there might be some obvious improvements that can be made. It would mean a lot to me if someone with a bit more experience could take a look at the system I devised.

These are the parts: (I will note if there are multiple)

CHUX Rainproof Switching Power Supply 700w 12v 24v 36V 48V DC CE ac to dc constant voltage LED Outdoor Power Supply 720W
https://aliexpress.com/item/-/32881290665.html
14.5 should be enough, right? 12.5 for the main motors, and if I slow them while adjusting for the next shot with the other 2, the psu should be able to handle it? I can see that I am stretching it quite thin.

3D Printer U-type Plug Power Supply Switch Adapter Socket with Switch and Fuse July DropShip
https://aliexpress.com/item/-/32885008661.html
Seems like an ok choice

48V Adjustable step-down module DC-LM2596HVS input 4.5-50V electric vehicle stabilized voltage power supply
https://aliexpress.com/item/-/32859521892.html
quite a few
Seems reasonable. I don't think any ? < 48V component will exceed those 3A.

Spindle ER11 300W CNC Spindle Motor 52mm Router Bit Tools 0.3KW 220V Air Cooled Motor 3pcs ER11 Collet For Milling Machine
https://aliexpress.com/item/-/32898304423.html
x2 for ball rotation control
I've looked around for what other people are using, and this one seemed more than reasonable. Still, I don't have much experience with this, so correct me if I'm wrong.

16A DC Motor Drive Module Dual Way H Bridge Control Board Drives IC
https://aliexpress.com/item/-/32869551194.html
One of these looks like its enough to control both of the 300W motors.

DC 12V Gear Reduction Motor Worm Reversible High Torque Turbo Geared Motor 2-100RPM Mayitr Mini Electric Gearbox Reducer
https://aliexpress.com/item/-/32828852765.html
I was planing on using the 6rpm one for rotating the ball feeding mechanism.
It should be able to keep on spinning at a constant speed with the load of a bunch of balls on top of it, right?
This is the kind of mechanism I'm aiming for:

For keeping track of the 6rpm motor rotations.

1/2/4/8 Channel 5V DC Relay Module Solid State Low Level G3MB-202P Relay SSR AVR DSP for arduino Diy Kit

The one with 2 relays. One for the beeper, and the other one for the 6rpm motor.

C18 For Arduino Car Helicopter Crash Collision Sensor Switch Module Robot Model

I was planing on using this for finding the starting position of the mechanism for feeding the balls, but I think that I will scrap it, and just make the calculation based on when the first ball gets loaded. No need to know its precise position from the start really.

Electric Linear actuator 100mm Stroke linear motor controller dc 12V 24V 100/200/300/500/600/750/800/900/1100/1300/1500N
https://aliexpress.com/item/-/32688359779.html
The 48v one with 30mm/s for vertical adjustment seems to be enough

180 degrees one for the horizontal adjustment.

WAVGAT 1PCS New Dual H Bridge DC Stepper Motor Drive Controller Board Module L298N for Arduino smart car robot
https://aliexpress.com/item/-/32556583041.html
One for the actuator, and one for the servo.

1pcs/lot HC-SR501 Adjust IR Pyroelectric Infrared PIR Motion Sensor Detector Module for GREATZT for raspberry pi kits

A few things in mind

Those are the components I chose, and my worries, and thoughts on them. If you see anything wrong with my choices, please tell me where I can do better.
Thanks for taking the time to get to here :)

Hi,

After almost 1 year I would like to build the same machine.

Could you please share the progress of your project? I’m especially interested if the choice of motors was fine and also if you found out what is the best distance between the cannon wheels. Of cource any other details will be welcomed.

Kind regards.

I didn't really get any feedback on my parts, so I gave up. The price of the machine would definitely exceed 100 euros, and I don't have that kind of money for experimenting. I have put some more thought into the project since making the post though.
This 775 DC motor might be a better deal:

I've changed my mind about many parts of the machine. Some of them were unnecessary, and some of them were more expensive than what I was willing to pay.

If you don't mind experimenting with the parts, I could update you on the latest parts I've been considering, and you could keep us in the loop :)

Thanks for the reply. Of course your latest list would help. In case I go for it, which is very likely, I will keep you updated with the progress.

Kind regards.

Here is the list of parts:
Mosfet for controling the motors:

Motors for launching the balls and adjusting the spin:

Stepdown modules:

A beeper:

A PSU:

Motor for the ball feeding mechanism:

Motor for horizontal adjustment:

Power plug:

Linear actuator for vertical adjustment:

(there are cheaper ways, but that one just seemed the most hassle free)
You may want a collision detector positioned beneath the feeding mechanism to know if a ball has been fed at an expected time, and adjust if not:

It may seem like a very extensive list of parts, but I wanted to have as much control over the hardware parts, so I could comfortably let loose with the software side.

Good luck with your project.
