Pi3 won't recover from reboot

Sun Sep 16, 2018 12:09 pm

Hello all. Have a Pi3 and I like it so far, but if I try to reboot from ssh or from the command line while plugged into a display, it just hangs at some point and will never reset. If I try from the GUI it works, however I'm using this as a security monitor camera so it's headless and on the other side of the house on a different floor, paint to go unplug it from power to get it to reset. What log should I be looking in? I've tried manually stopping the motion service before giving the sudo reboot to see if for some reason it was the issue but it doesnt seem to matter.

Thank you!

try using the shutdown command? a 'shutdown -h' will stop the system and it will not restart until powered down and powered back up or reset is pulled to ground. a 'shutdown -r' will restart the system..

Code: Select all

sudo shutdown -r now
is the instant restart command i use,

The "reboot" command is the equivalent of "shutdown -r now" with less typing.

If you have recently updated the system, and you have Bluetooth turned off, you have been bitten by a bug which causes a kernel panic during shutdown. The fix for now is to either turn Bluetooth on, or roll back to the last stable firmware/kernel release.

Code: Select all

sudo rpi-update 911147a3276beee09afc4237e1b7b964e61fb88a

Thanks for the clarification, shutdown is pretty ubiquitous perhaps thats why its stuck..

use grep to search the log files for key words..

Code: Select all

Syntax:
grep "literal_string" filename
like

Code: Select all

$ grep "Bluetooth" /var/log/syslog
or

Code: Select all

$ grep "Bluetooth" /var/log/*
the output will be the whole line (entry) the search word is found in ;) so useful.

This looks like it's fixed in 4.14.70+ and 4.14.70-v7+.

Just installed:

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 4.14.70-v7+ #1143 SMP Mon Sep 17 13:55:01 BST 2018 armv7l GNU/Linux
No change - still will not reboot or shutdown properly with Bluetooth off for me.

Well I don't know what is causing the error, so I don't know what to search for nor in which log. Is there a list somewhere of what logs are use for what so I could get an idea of where to start looking? I've only use individual logs from programs which are easy, because thy are usually named after the program they log! lol im assuming the pi os maintains several of its own logs for startup and shutdown somewhere, no?

New commit of same version number 4 hours ago seems to have fixed the problem for me.

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~ $ uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 4.14.70-v7+ #1144 SMP Tue Sep 18 17:34:46 BST 2018 armv7l GNU/Linux

2 of my RPis (RPi3B and RPi3B+) were bitten by the bug. Applied the cure as mentioned by HawaiianPi (roll back to the last stable firmware).

wont be doing any updates and upgrade for a while... until official information on the fix has been made public....

/var/logs is home of many logs, syslog as mentioned above is a good place to start, and any entries found that are relevant (use grep as mentioned above to search) should provide information as to what to look at next.. its breadcrumb following..
