Shrink Filesystem

Wed Aug 15, 2018 6:01 pm

Hello!
I know that there is the possibility to expand the memory of the SD card after a fresh installation. I did that via raspi-config.

Now I use a 64gb SDcard and also a backup script (raspibackup). This backup script will save and compress a 1: 1 copy of the SD card on my NAS.
I have two Raspberry. One has a 16 GB SD card and also uses raspibackup with the identical settings.
On the Raspi with the 16Gb card as well as with the 64GB card, almost 4GB are used. If the backup of the Raspi with the 16 gb card is done, that is quite fast, because he really only copies the 4 GB (via DD).
The Raspi with the 64 GB card takes forever because it copies much more.
Why? No idea. Raspibackup is set to identical on both.

So now my idea, can the extended memory be somehow reduced? That's just 16 GB of the 64 GB used (partitioned)?

Many thanks in advance!

That's an very old post I just stumbled upon but nevertheless let's add some information:

You used dd to backup your image with raspiBackup. That creates a full backup of the whole SD card. There exists an option to save the used space only (See https://www.linux-tips-and-tricks.de/en/faq/#a16). Another option is to use pishrink (see previouse link) together with raspiBackup.
