Easy SMS on your RPi ??

I picked this up somewhere on the internet and it sounds just too good to be true.
I am a Linux newbie and could not get it to work, but maybe some magician out there can make it work. This example is for the AT&T network in the USA.

At the command line type:

mail -s "converged" (your telephone number) @ txt.att.net
do not enter the ( ) , just the phone number.

This will work, usually no problem.

It is up to individual phone companies if they provide an email to SMS gateway. I found it very common in the US for providers to do it and not so common in Switzerland. I have to pay Swisscom extra for the privilege. There are also 3rd parties that provide email to sms gateways, you usually pay per message.

Otherwise, it is the same as sending any mail from the command line or php or what have you on the RPi.

I used ssmtp as it is much easier to securely configure than sendmail and I never need to receive mail on my RPi, just send it occasionally. Just be aware, setting up mail correctly on a linux box, even a limited app like ssmtp is a bit complicated.

I set up ssmtp to use my gmail account as the smtp gateway.
