Wi-Fi Enabled Lockbox

Sun Jul 22, 2018 11:53 pm

I'm working on my caspstone project for DeVry, and we want to use a Raspberry Pi as the brains of our project. Our main issue is that none of us are familiar with programming on the Pi. DeVry doesn't do a good job with teaching current languages.

The function of our project will be as follows:

1. Scan tracking number barcode

2. Unlock solenoid locking mechanism

3. Receive new tracking number "keys" from app or browser based interface

4. Box will send notification email or text when package is delivered.

We will ideally be using a Pi Zero W and would need it to be display-less.

Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Can I introduce you to another new forum user @DKHEND17

Maybe you could share experiences?

Many projects you want to undertake may not have fully worked examples to copy. (That is good: it means you need to bring your own experience and knowledge to contribute to the solution.)

Break the problem down into smaller constituent parts. In this case, processing the barcode and operating the servo.

For the latter, there is a good recent tutorial here: https://www.raspberrypi-spy.co.uk/2018/ ... pberry-pi/

Or maybe the lock solenoid can simply be switched on or off?

The barcode element may depend on the particular scanner you have been assigned. What online resources can you find about interfacing it?

Well Jeremy I think we both had the same idea.

DKHEND and I are on the same team. I didn't realize he made a post here as well.

We haven't been assigned a scanner. We're told to source our own hardware. This is challenging. Basically we need it to read common barcodes from the major parcel carriers...
