Need to provide network/internet access via wireless connection

Fri Jul 13, 2018 8:35 pm

My router is in another room from where the raspberry pi will be working. I need to connect via wireless connection. Is there a device I can get that will allow connection via RJ45 to a wireless receiver/transmitter?

Have you looked at adding a wireless access point to your router?

This would be one option, assuming your router does not already have wireless.

Another option might be to replace the router, since one without wireless must be quite old, and you may get better performance from something more up to date.

lots of pop-ups...and where is that annoying music coming from?

I assume you mean you want to add WiFi to your Pi, to use the existing wireless network from your router.

Which model Pi?
  • Pi0W, Pi0WH, Pi3B and Pi3B+ all have wireless built in.
  • Other consumer Pis can have a wireless dongle plugged into USB, on some models an extra USB hub is required. Some dongles work better than others, I believe there is an RPi branded one.
  • I've not seen a wireless dongle for connection to RJ45, but they might exist.
  • You could use a pair of Ethernet-over- mains adapters, if the two rooms are on the same power circuit (or at least same phase of a multi-phase installation)

I got the opposite assumption from the OP, but okay.

They do, but are typically much more expensive than USB WiFi dongles. The advantage is they don't require OS drivers (the system sees it as a wired connection).

However, USB WiFi dongles are readily available for the Pi, so if your assumption is correct, that would be the way to go.
