If you are using something called Pixel you are probably using a VERY old version since that name has not been used for over a year.
Download the latest version of Raspbian Desktop for x86 and use that. Wifi should work I beleive.

There can be many causes. Here is one thing to check:
The built in WIFI in the laptop might be old standard 802.11g. If so make sure that the WIFI router is also set to 802.11g -OR- mixed mode 802.11 g and n.

It is also possible that the laptop WIFI is the even older 802.11b which newer router might not support at all.

My router is set to 802.11n only and I don't want to change it, so I disabled the built in WIFI (b & g only) in my laptop and use a USB WIFI dongle which supports the much faster 802.11n standard.
Unless specified otherwise my response is based on the latest and fully updated Raspbian Stretch w/ Desktop OS.

While you should really just download the latest version,
running an update:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
will have the same effect and bring in the most recent drivers for WiFi etc.
Android app - Raspi Card Imager - download and image SD cards - No PC required !

The manufacturer and model number is needed for the Wireless Chipset, see if it is recognised by hardinfo software:

The latest June 2018 x86 Operating System is ' Debian Stretch with Raspberry Pi Desktop'

https://www.raspberrypi.org/downloads/r ... i-desktop/

Many Laptops have either a switch or key combination to enable / disable WiFi have you checked that it is enabled ?

Regards finding out what hardware is in your Laptop you need an internet connection and install hardinfo:

Code: Select all

sudo apt update
sudo apt install hardinfo

https://packages.debian.org/stretch/hardinfo
