Pi 3b+ external antenna for wifi

Fri Jul 06, 2018 1:08 pm

Is there any chance of connecting an external antenna to the new 3b+?

I need to use a metal case for my application and want to use the internal wifi chip. To avoid interfering I need to disable the internal antenna. In the past I used the old Pi 3 b. It was very easy to solder an pigtail for the external antenna to the pcb. I did some research and it seems no one has done it on the new one yet.

Looking at the pcb I have two questions:

1) what is this pad for?
The attachment rpi3bp_antenna1.jpeg is no longer available

2) are these 0 Ohm resistors? Maybe I can use them for disconnecting and connecting the external antenna

I get my new raspberry on monday and will do some tests. Do you guys have any ideas?

Attaching an external antenna to a Pi breaks all the certification, and will probably make the actual transmission illegal, depending on jurisdiction.

For that reason we do not allow posts on how to do this on the official website.
