CAMERA AS A REAR-VIEW MIRROR

Thu Jun 14, 2018 9:31 am

Hello everyone,
I'm would like to build a rear-view system with the help of Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and a camera. I would be glad if you guys could offer insights.
The camera will be mounted above the trunk and the RPi beneath the dashboard with a 10 inch screen to display the live feed. I'm confused as to which camera I should go with as I'm new to this territory. I don't want the feed to be blurred even at high speeds (okayish feed is cool, not necessarily HD). So, can you please suggest a suitable camera module for doing this? Will the V2 be good enough? And please do provide a link for purchasing the cable connector for camera to RPi as the one accompanying the module will be too short for truck to dashboard.

Thanks in advance for helping out.

- Girish.

Definitely possible with v2 camera. I only have 640x480 videos, but both at 180fps which is more than you need on your display. Both videos were taken from running train along river Neckar, the second video at speed of 100km/h as can be deduced from the car staying at same place in frame and Germany 100km/h road limit. You can decide best whether this is OK for you (in general you can reduce blur by reducing shutter time):

There are (arbitrarily) many length available. Some people warn to use cables longer than 15cm, but I use 15/30/100/200cm cables without issues. Just search for "raspberry camera cable" on amazon.com or aliexpress.com.

Is this a fun project or a serious requirement? If the latter, just go and buy a commercial reversing camera system - it won't work out any more expensive.
