Arduino ide does not launch on pi3 stretch.

Wed Jun 13, 2018 11:41 pm

Hello, its been awhile since I do anything on the pi3 with arduino IDE. Today I fired up the arduino ide, I click on it, it is as if it was going to open, but after a while, the hourglass vanished, the IDE does not open. I also re-installed arduino IDE and I did update and upgrade to the latest of stretch. What happened? Thanks

did you install from the repo, or get the (much newer, much better) version from https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software ?

The version in the Debian/Mint/Ubuntu/Raspbian repos is a piece of junk - it won't work with ESP8266s.
Grabbing the version from https://www.arduino.cc/download_handler ... arm.tar.xz gives you the latest and greatest.

"The version in the Debian/Mint/Ubuntu/Raspbian repos is a piece of junk" indeed. Don't the repo people ever bother to update it? So irresponsible.

I downloaded the tar from Aduino site, but I just think I made a mistake, I just realizedI downloaded the x86 version, not the ARM version. I will try again.

No, because it's the version that Debian/Raspbian thinks is current. Unless the Debian maintainer is really up on community developments, package versions don't get updated unless someone cares. One of my favourite graphics packages, netpbm, is stuck with a roughly 2001 version because no-one's stepping up to maintain it.

Back when my Raspbian was still Jessie I installed the stock Arduino IDE from the repo.
I never liked the repo Arduino IDE due to the absence of Board Manager...

So I installed Arduino IDE 1.8.2 nightly build to test it. Liked it, and installed lots of boards and libraries thereafter...
Then I dist-upgraded from Jessie to Stretch (so I can preserve my Arduino settings) . Still works fine (begs me to update libraries though :D )

On my other installation I installed a fresh image of Stretch and then a fresh install of Arduino IDE 1.8.5. Works perfectly OK.

Just opened the stock repo Arduino IDE (after about a year of hiatus) to confirm version no as 2:1.05+dfsg2-4.1). So mine still starts. ;)

now I wonder why yours' wont start....and mine does....
