A simple fix for accessing raspberry pi by hostname from windows with samba

Sat May 12, 2018 3:17 pm

I have spent a lot of time trying to configure access to the raspberry pi by the hostname through windows with programs like putty. Most of the topics I looked upon did not include the point below.

To access the PPi by hostname.local just follow the steps below:

Install samba

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install samba
Edit samba configuration to include wins support

Code: Select all

wins support = yes
in the configuration file

Code: Select all

 sudo nano /etc/samba/smb.conf
.

This is the only change required in the configuration.

extract of configuration file:

Code: Select all

# Windows Internet Name Serving Support Section:
# WINS Support - Tells the NMBD component of Samba to enable its WINS Server
   wins support = yes
restart the service

Code: Select all

sudo service smbd restart
.

After this you should be able to access the raspberry pi by hostname from windows with programs such as putty. Such as ping <hostname>.local

I have added this post as I spent a day finding out the configuration... none of them worked... they also included many other steps not required with this intention in mind and to help the community it has been posted.
