non-Pi question... where are those CPU cycles going?

Mon May 07, 2018 10:54 pm

I know this is off topic on the RPi board, but I'm not a member of any group where it would be on-topic, so I'm just throwing it out there...

My Windows PC at work is always running "scan64.exe" (VirusScan On-Demand Scanner) and "mcshield.exe" (McAfee On-Access Scanner Service) and using roughly 25% CPU to do so just about every time I check, so I'm guessing it goes on 24/7. I presume every other PC in the company is too, and perhaps many other companies. Because I don't have the knowledge or interest to dig into it, I can't tell if it's actually spending most of that CPU time mining cryptocurrency or who-knows-what-else, instead of looking for viruses. I doubt I'm the first person to have that thought. What do you suppose the odds are that something like that is actually happening?

I’ve never found mcafee to be any good, and it’s conmon for it to hog resources - lightweight free ones are often better:

Android app - Raspi Card Imager - download and image SD cards - No PC required !
