Replace default Raspbian desktop

Fri May 04, 2018 2:59 pm

The default desktop in Raspbian is not to my liking, and I wish to change it to LXDE. However, I haven't found a way to change it that works. Since Raspbian is faster than Lubuntu (which is what I use everywhere else when I run Linux) I'd like to give it a shot and see how it works. Is there a way I can swap out the desktop for the plain old everyday LXDE? The target of the default desktop is an audience different from me- I'm not picking on it, just trying to make a stanardized desktop for the computers I have personally.

Thanks!!

The Raspberry Pi Desktop is a fork of LXDE.

You can try removing the 'ui' component from apt and downgrading all packages, but that is likely to have knock-on effects on other things too.

Thanks, FotL. I had been aware it was LXDE, but didn't know how to work around their customizations. I'm off to inspect that thread. Thanks for the tip on it!!

That would make me a bit nervous to try. With my luck, I'd end up killing it! LOL I haven't always had the best luck with my RPis. I can always rebuild a Lubuntu or roll my own with one of the text based Ubuntus with an addition of LXDE.

You could start with Raspbian Lite and simply install LXDE on it, maybe?

We have patched LXDE a fair bit, so it wouldn't be vanilla Debian LXDE.

Further to my earlier response have you considered ArchLinuxArm which is a CLi Operating System ?

In their repository they offer various Desktop Environments ie Mate, Budgie, LXDE, XFCE etcetera......

Some excellent suggestions! I see a number of them worth trying, and since I have the time to do them sincec I am out on disability, I'll likely give them each a try.

I really like Lubuntu but it is just too slow as well. These give me hope! I love the Pi's I have (yes, I know the apostrophe is wrong, but it was too close to an inappropriate word when spelled correctly! LOL)
