minidlna crashes raspi

Sat Apr 14, 2018 10:16 pm

So I have been running minidlna/ReadyMedia successfully on a raspi 3 for about 6 months without issue. But about 2 weeks ago whenever I connect to my minidlna with a dlna player on my android (mconnect usually, but I have tried many players recently on multiple smartphones trying figure out what the issue could be) the first song plays but then the player on the android stalls out. When I ssh into the raspi 3, I see a screenful of similar instances of:
Message from [email protected] at Apr 14 17:09:11 ... kernel:[ 979.501263] 7fe0: 76a23340 7e80c8fc 00017f84 76a2334c 60000010 0000000b 3abfa861 3abfac61
I have 4 or 5 raspi 3's and have tried moving my ext usb HD with my music directory to another raspi 3, even one running openhabian and the exact same thing occurs regardless the setup.

I generally run the lastest version of minidlna, not the one in the repos, but have also downgraded to the repo version without any change.

I also thought maybe the problem was related to the same ext usb HD I have been using since setting this up from day one 6 or so months ago since when I boot up connected to a monitor the boot stalls out when the ext usb HD is connected at the point where the raspi 3 tries to mount it, but fails and the boot process fails. So I removed the automount entry in fstab but that does not seem to make any difference. So if I want to reboot the raspi 3 I need to remember to first umount the ext usb HD drive first and physically remove it or the raspi 3 boot process stalls out and fails.

I wonder if anyone else is experiencing the same issue, or if not might have some suggestions what the problem might be.

Additional Info:

So after playing a single song when using a dlna player and the dlna player just seems to freeze and an ssh screen on the server is filled with the

Code: Select all

Message from syslogd
pasted in my previous post, if I hit the enter key on the raspi 3 I get back to a cli prompt.

Even though checking the status of the minidlna session reveals that it still appears to be fine:

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~/.minidlna $ sudo service minidlna status
[sudo] password for pi:
● minidlna.service - LSB: DLNA/UPnP-AV media server
Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/minidlna; generated; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: active (running) since Sat 2018-04-14 17:02:40 CDT; 1h 37min ago
     Docs: man:systemd-sysv-generator(8)
  Process: 712 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/minidlna start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCE
   CGroup: /system.slice/minidlna.service

Apr 14 17:02:39 raspberrypi systemd[1]: Starting LSB: DLNA/UPnP-AV media server.
Apr 14 17:02:40 raspberrypi minidlna[712]: Starting minidlna: minidlna.
Apr 14 17:02:40 raspberrypi systemd[1]: Started LSB: DLNA/UPnP-AV media server.
If I force the dlna player on an android to stop and start it again or use another dlna player, it does not detect the minidlna server.

If I then restart the minidlna service, it then reveals that the restart failed:

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~/.minidlna $ sudo service minidlna restart
[email protected]:~/.minidlna $ sudo service minidlna status
● minidlna.service - LSB: DLNA/UPnP-AV media server
Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/minidlna; generated; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: active (running) since Sat 2018-04-14 18:41:33 CDT; 3s ago
     Docs: man:systemd-sysv-generator(8)
  Process: 864 ExecStop=/etc/init.d/minidlna stop (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS
  Process: 870 ExecStart=/etc/init.d/minidlna start (code=exited, status=0/SUCCE
   CGroup: /system.slice/minidlna.service

Apr 14 18:41:33 raspberrypi systemd[1]: Starting LSB: DLNA/UPnP-AV media server.
Apr 14 18:41:33 raspberrypi minidlna[870]: Starting minidlna: minidlna failed!
Apr 14 18:41:33 raspberrypi systemd[1]: Started LSB: DLNA/UPnP-AV media server.
And checking

Code: Select all

ps aux|grep minidlna
confirms that minidlna ever did restart.

The only thing I can do from here is to unmount the ext usb HD (for reasons detailed in previous post) and reboot the raspi, re-mount the ext usb HD and restart the minidlna. But the exact same process repeats after a single song is played by a dlna player on an android connected to the same LAN.

what version of minidlna are you running ??
I prefer installing the lastest ReadiaMedia version, the last version I downloaded was 1.2.1. But I have also installed the version in the raspbian repos experiencing the exact same behaviour. So I am not convinced that the problem is directly due to minidlna.
what is your OS ??
up-to-date raspbian stretch

So I ended up installing UMS (would prefer to fix the minidlna/raspi issue because UMS is a bit resource heavy) last night on one of my raspis and once everything was set up, it works a little better, but still exhibits a similar issue. Once the audio files are indexed, I can navigate the dir on my android using mconnect fine. I can play entire albums or even queues to the end, but once all songs have played then the UMS is, like minidlna, unavailable and requires the raspi to be rebooted to once again become available. That is, a simple

Code: Select all

sudo service ums restart
does not work. Although unlike the minidlna,

Code: Select all

sudo service ums status
does not indicate any problem. The UMS shows that it was restarted fine without anything in the process failing, but still remains unavailable on the LAN until the rapsi is rebooted.

So now I have set up a cron job to restart the raspi hourly and re-mount the media disk @reboot, and although it is hack it works. But I would much rather figure out what the underlying issue is and get back to using minidlna again.

Hi,

I can confirm ur problem that it started 2weeks ago after successful 8 months on deb repo 1.6.1 minidlna. In my case minidlna crashes with ext. subtitles,if ı remove external subtitle or try to watch movies without subtitle it is working without any issue for days but each try with subtitle crashs minidlna.I also upgraded/complied to minidlna 1.2.1 but result was same..I think it happened after last pi kernel update on stretch.I am receiving same syslogd message.

dmesg | grep -i taint

indicates kernel error(!!TAINTED!!...noway...) with minidlna process and "G" "D" "C" flags after crash.I searched for that and found "snd_bcm2835" module as staging(with "lsmod" and "modinfo <modulename>").I can say that ı have no installed non-tree or non-licenced app/module which may cause "C" flag except snd_bcm2835 module.

Anyway ı installed serviio 1.9.1 and it is working well and no issue with external subs but ram usage is a bit high due to java usage instead of sql database.I still have tainted kernel issue and receiving kernel error messages(this time process java) when i started to watch movie on serviio but no crash/freeze.

Additional info with minidlna; ı tested with
Lg tv: directly crashes with ext subs/ no issue without subs but was perfectly working till latest kernel update
Kodi on android tvbox: no crash on files with ext sub but can not see ext subs.minidlna crashs after closing connection
Android phone with vlc: no crash on files with ext sub but can not see ext subs.minidlna crashs after closing connection
Minidlna debug on my pi: all ext subs indexed and ready to being transferred with related movie.

Could you verify taint status of your kernel?

cat /proc/sys/kernel/tainted

will give u a number. If it is not "0" your kernel should be tainted with same issue.(After reboot it is not giving any number to me but when minidlna crashs or If I use serviio, it is becoming "1024" on my case)

Also you can check,

cat /var/log/kern.log

to see kernel error logs.

I'm almost sure that this is related with snd_bcm2835 module which changed on latest kernel update.I learned that it is not only me and found some patchs & solutions but never tried(actually I don't know how to apply patchs) and waiting for an official solution. But you can try with your own risk.

recently, I upgraded from Raspbian Jessie Light to Stretch.
now I have kernel 4.14.30.
minidlna is version 1.2.0

is there any info that I could supply ??
any tests I could do ??

edit:
I just played a mkv-video in VLC, using minidlna as input.
had a terminal window open and it was floaded with this:

It seems you are updated.Just run minidlna with some media and then type

dmesg | grep -i taint

on command line

more or less same but you don't have "C" flag on tainted status

can you run

modinfo snd_bcm2835

and check "staging:" part to see it is "Y" or "N"?

so actually it should be a "false taint" while this module coming from official repo and already stated as staging but it is effecting some media streaming applications.I tried several ways to remove this taint issue then gave it up with minidlna and turned to serviio.I have still same kernel errors but at least no freeze/crash.If issue is corfirmed with more people,I think raspbian team may release a fix

inspite of all the kernel logs, minidlna itself does not crash.
and it plays external subs.

does this mean serviio is a better option ??
will it work basically the same as minidlna ??
I do also have Plex, but dlna of this does not go very well.

I was using minidlna for 8 months without any issue including ext subtitles but everything started with kernel update, than syslogd messages and crashes started on minidlna with ext subs. I tried with kodi and smart phones as well without success.Serviio is using transcoding and has a different subtitle transfer protocol which is not effecting from this taint issue. But when you compare with minidlna, serviio is completely ram hunger.Working with java database and using 120-140mb ram for java on background.

Edit: Setup for serviio is less complicated than minidlna and has a good web browser interface that you can set everyting on it including media libraries, metadata setting, prefered audio lang for multichannel videos etc.

welcome to my world  I am trying to get rid of this for weeks and turning back my minidlna life again but up to now no luck..I think it will not be fixed before a new kernel update.I found a new patch related with this,I guess some guys trying to fix it but as I told I dont know how to apply patch manually or it will work.

ok, thank you
may be this does not belong in this topic, but after I updated from Jessie to Stretch, it is no longer possible to reboot my RPi.
sudo reboot now or sudo shutdown -r now will log me out of SSH.
but ping keeps working.
the only solution is to pull the power supply.

happened to me a few times.Try to remove minidlna

sudo apt-get remove --purge minidlna

after getting backup of your settings(/etc/minidlna.conf and /etc/default/minidlna) and re-try after a poweroff. It may be related with each other.

after removing minidlna reboot went fine.
previously I had minidlna vers. 1.1.6
which came from jessie or jessie-backports
do you think, I can still use that ??

I tried both with 1.1.6 from official repo and 1.2.1 from ReadyMedia and all of them triggered that kernel logs. Also Serviio is triggering that logs as Java process but effects are looking like better. Minidlna freezed my pi3 a few times and usually it was booting after 3-4 minutes which is very unusual

Edit: I think you can download and install any version from ReadyMedia

I will get minidlna back on again.
as I already have Plex, I will activate dlna from there and see what gives :)

dlna from Plex is no-good :)

according to this topic you can get a more recent kernel, that solves the problem:

so, I got all my courage together and ran "sudo rpi-update"
no problem, but also no reboot.
pulled the power-plug, waited and put it back in: no reboot.
waited some 5 mins. still nothing.
pulled the plug again, waited again and put it back in: hallelujah, it booted.

now I have kernel 4.14.34 and there are no more system-floods in terminal.
looked at kern.log and the last error was 10 hours ago, well before this exercise.
dmesg | grep taint comes back empty, nothing there.

seems good to me now.
anything somebody wants me to check ??

Could you try it after streaming with minidlna? System flood starts with usage of minidlna while terminal window is open and idle. Also after reboot taint status becoming null and it is being triggered by minidlna(or other dlna renderers)
