No sound to monitor

Tue Apr 10, 2018 9:56 am

Hi All

So, all of a sudden I have no sound. I have changed the monitor from a TV to a 24" monitor - but am not sure why there is no longer any sound output from my Pi 3B?

I have tried the usual un-commenting the line from the config.txt file to force HDMI, but I still get no sound output. I have ensured the volume level is max on the Pi and the Monitor.

Any pointers please?

There is some configuration and troubleshooting advice from the Raspberry Pi Foundation here:

https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentati ... -config.md

Before you struggle too much - are you confident that the new non-tv monitor actually handles audio via its HDMI port? Could you double-check with some other source of an audio-via-hdmi signal such as a dvd player?

Hi B.Goode

I think the sound is getting to the monitor through the HDMI as when I plug a set of headphones into the Monitors headphone jack, I get sound through them loud and clear and the only source of sound is a Youtube video playing in Chromium on my Pi!

what monitor - post a link
does it have speakers?
if you get sound on the monitor via its headphone then it is a monitor problem not a RPi problem

But you wrote:

Surely your description indicates that there is sound output from your RPi?

The issue seems to be localised in the monitor itself? Is there a separate volume control for the on-board speakers that is turned down? Does the monitor actually have its own speakers?

Edit: covering the same territory as the previously unseen reply from @rattus...

WOW! it seems the Monitor I bought has no speakers - and I didn't even think to check this before I purchased it as I thought all Monitors would include rudimentary sound output!

The model is 23.8" BenQ GW2470

So, I guess my next question is can I use a set of external speakers on the Pi connected via one of the USB ports? Will need to go and purchase a set! Grrrrr

Why not connect analogue (not usb) speakers via the outlet you have already discovered and used on the monitor?

Or the RPi outputs analogue audio via the 3.5 mm a/v jack - no need to complicate the issue with usb.

Yep, that's what I think I am going to have to do. Will have to pop to Argos to get a cheapo set.
