Some basic questions

Thu Oct 25, 2012 3:14 am

Finally got my 512M Pie today. Works great - just a few simple questions (which I'm sure have been covered before, but better to have them in one place)

1) I am running the stock Wheezy/Raspbian image - which is only 256M. What is the simplest, most straightforward way to get and install the 512M firmware?

2) Keyboard mappings in X. I did the keyboard configuration thing (as part of the inital raspbian-config) and selected Happy Hacker keyboard (which I have) and everything else basic US. But, in X, the | key generates ~, and the ~ generates "logical not" (funny sort of bar with a hook at the end). In the console, the keys work fine. Now, the funny thing about this, is that, way back when, when nobody had a Pi and we were all messing around with running the Pi system under QEMU under Windows, I figured out (and told the rest of the board members) how to change it (the hard way, so to speak) for each of the console and the GUI, but now I can't remember the details (from so long ago). What I need now is the (hard way) instructions for fixing specifically, the keyboard mapping in the GUI.

3) Sound does not work. Ran omxplayer on a .MP4 file - video is fine, but no sound. I am running through HDMI - it should work (push the sound through the HDMI, but it doesn't)

4) Does there exist a "YouTube app"? Browser (Midori) fails as a YouTube app for the usual and expected reason: No Flash for ARM (and no HTML5 support in Midori.

5) Python Games: None of the Tetris-like games work. Each one (there are 3) puts up a "Press a key to continue" (I.e., to start the game) screen, but when you press a key, it returns to the menu of games. I really want to play Tetris - the main use of any computer system (heh heh).

Any/all help will be greatly appreciated.

Item 5, same here, just falls back to menu. Reminds me of a Zorin CD install I did which had menu entries missing and did other goofy things, turned out to be a bad burn.

I havent done a CRC check on this install, of course I leap into it expecting all to be well...

I am happy to report that the keyboard problem (in my original list) has gone away. The keys now work correctly. I assume (but cannot be certain) that the "upgrade" (of the apt-get update/apt-get upgrade dance) fixed this.

To clarify, the issues I am most concerned about (and would most like to see a reply back to) are issues 1 & 3 (memory and sound) in the original list. Thanks!
