So I just got one of the new 512K Pi's Friday last. After setting it up with Raspbian I noticed that using a Logitech keyboard and Logitech Optical Mouse I was having endless "disconnect" and "reconnect" messages issued by the OS. So let me tell you all the troubleshooting tips I found and the result.
1) Make sure the USB devices are rated 5V @ 100mA. Done and done, no problem.
2) Try a different micro USB cable to ensure cable isn't bad. Did that, two cables give same result.
3) Make sure power supply can supply enough power. Started with Apple USB wall converter rated 5V @ 2A. I am always skeptical of these ratings but doesn't seem like this should be an issue.
4) Some folks suggested that ripple or noise in the power supply could cause issues. So this is what I finally did.
I hacked one of my cables to get the connector. I then soldered that to some stranded 18g wire and hooked the whole thing up to my BK1621A bench top power supply. Connected the whole thing up at 5V and started the power. (mind you this is a $200+ power supply capable of 18V @5A!) Well the disconnect warnings started up like clockwork. Now they are less frequent but still there.
I can also tell you this. The test points on the board, with the PS at 5V yield 4.875V and the current draw on the PS during startup never exceeded 495mA. And with the XFCE4 desktop running the current draw is a steady 360-455mA.
I have to wonder, did I get a bad board or is there an inherent design issue here? There seems to be much confusion out on the intertube and I would really like someone who knows what they are talking about to help me out here. I have spent too much time reading guesses this weekend.
Thoughts, suggestions? Issue with new board?
