Vision Bonnet & Pi 3

Tue Feb 20, 2018 5:12 am

Hi,

I was wondering if the bonnet is compatible with Pi 3 as host. I assume it is not given that we don’t have a similar port on the Pi for the small cable?

Thanks

The answer is yes, yes you can. There are a few tricks though. It is tested with Pi3 and PiZeroW.

You will need the cable shipped with the vision kit (15 pin to 22 pin FPC) and need to procure one of these cables:
(15 pin to 22 pin FPC from RPI)
https://www.adafruit.com/product/3157

The cable that comes with the kit (google supplied) is used to connect the VisionBonnet board to the Pi3.

The cable that you purchase from adafruit (or similar) is used to connect the Camera to the Vision Bonnet.

Here is a picture of just such a setup. You can used it for reference to determine flex orientation.

Be careful! The board will short if you connect the flexes with the wrong orientation and your Pi will not boot, unplug and try again :/

I recommend using the latest image from Google.

Clearly the cardboard enclosure will not work for the Pi3, so maybe design your own?

Thanks for posting this. I was able to verify this works for me too:

I trying with a Pi3 B+ and no joy. Will not boot with the bonnet plugged into the 40 Pin connector :( Is there some difference I'm not aware of that makes it work with a Pi3 but on a Pi3 B+ ??

I tried both the included 8GB pre-loaded system with the kit and a download of the "latest" xy image.

I guess I could use the Zero that came with the kit, but I want the better networking of the B+ for my idea.

My cabling matches the photos.

Edit:
The Pi3B plus boots the AIY SD card when the vision bonnet is not plugged into the header. I swapped in a 2.5A supply for the 2.2A I've been using, no difference.

I don't know what is wrong. When I plug the bonnet into the PiZero it boots. plugged into my Pi3 B plus it doesn't :(

I guess I'll have to start out using the PiZeroW :(

Edit again:
After verifying that the the joy detector worked on the PiZeroW using the 8GB card from the kit, joy score 0.06 :) I carefully took it apart and tried it on a Pi3 B (non B+ model). Booting the 8GB card in the Pi3 Joy, it works. The 32GB card I'd loaded with the the "latest" 2018-08-03.img booted but I haven't managed to get the joy detector to start from it. I may re-burn the card as it initially prompted me for some "updates" after which the AIY desktop image was gone.

So I'm still clueless as to why it works with the Pi3B and not the Pi3B+ Not optimum for my idea, but a heck of a lot better than trying to use a PiZeroW for it!

Same issue here... works on 3B but not 3B+

In a discussion with the AIY team involving an entirely unrelated matter, I was informed that vision bonnet will not work on the 3B+ due to the change in power sequencing. One of the biggest changes to the 3B+ was inclusion of the custom made MXL7704 PMIC that's been in the works since 2015.

Article on this site: https://www.raspberrypi.org/blog/pi-power-supply-chip/
MXL7704 Product page: https://www.exar.com/product/power-mana ... cs/mxl7704

It could be made to work with some soldering, but why mess around soldering on a Pi 3B+? If you need faster CPU, faster network, USB3, PCIe, eMMC, etc, etc there other (more expensive) SBCs and SoMs that you could plug a Myriad stick into. You can always can get a Jetson! (Grab me an Xavier pre-order while you're at it.) Or wait for Google's inference products: https://aiyprojects.withgoogle.com/edge-tpu/ If you are actively using Google's cloud TPUs to train models and use other GCP ML products, you may qualify to get it a little early: https://cloud.google.com/edge-tpu/ Many companies are coming out with inference chips; they will be essential in phones, cars, cameras, and pretty much everything else as AI continues its ridiculously frightening growth.

So, I came here to see if anyone was having trouble with the 08-03 release and using the Pi3B with the Vision Bonnet, cause mine isn't a happy camper. But I found this and figured others would ask and want to know why, so there ya have it! Back to work for me.

Cheers!
