PI Backup

Sun Feb 18, 2018 10:09 pm

Hi there,

I have done a few backups already, surprisingly the amount of size increased every time and now the image file size is about 20gb where actually it's only about 10GB total used (if I check the used size correctly). Why is the image file almost twice its actual size? Is there any way to shrink it?

Use the "SD Card copier" (piclone). It does a file-level backup and prevents
bloated images. Please note that piclone only works on a Raspberry Pi which is
turned on and running Raspbian.

Are you doing a full backup to a new archive each time, or using something that piles on changed files to an existing archive (which could easily explain what you are seeing) Otherwise, cleaning up log files, un-needed /tmp files, etc. before backing up might be in order. What are using to back up your system?
