Okay to place components under Compute Module?

Fri Feb 16, 2018 6:31 pm

Hi, I have a project in the works that incorporates the CM3, so far it has been a great choice.

I was wondering what the best practice is regarding the placement of components on a custom carrier PCB "underneath" the CM3? I see for example on the official CMIO board there are a few resistors there, but would it be okay to place an IC under there, such as a LAN9512?

I believe about 2.8mm of space is available under a CM3, and a LAN9512 is 1mm in height. Would this then be fine, or could you see potential interference issues with placing a sensitive IC such as this so close to the CM3?

Thanks!

The problem is the Power Dissipation of your LAN9514.
( typical nearly 1 W when 100BASE-TX )

Thanks mic_s, that's a good point for a power hungry component such as LAN9512/4.

And if there's no problems regarding to the power dissipation?
Let's say, for example fitting the SD card socket below the module (in a case in which there's no need to change the SD often).

Would it be possible?

Cheers!
