New User - Getting OS onto an SD card

Sat Oct 20, 2012 6:41 pm

I'm having a lot of difficulty getting the pi debian os onto a SDHC card.

I have two PC's one running XP and a laptop with Vista. The card reader on the desktop machine cannot read HC cards so is no help. I have updated drivers on the laptop and can now read the SDHC card on that computer.

I've tried using Win32DiskImager to copy the img file onto the card, but the program will not list any destination drives to copy to. I've tried run as adminstrator and reformatting the SD card, no good.

Next I tried flashnul to copy the image but that also fails with an error message.

I'm guessing that none of the above programs like Vista (who does?).

I have managed to get a copy of denbian to run in Oracle VM virtualbox on the laptop, but not knowing anything much about linux, have no idea how to get the OS img file from the windows file system so I could attempt using dd to write the image to the card. Is this even possible? If it is can anybody assist with a few instructions to help me out?

Thanks Kim

This is a common problem with the SD Card slots fitted in many Laptops.

Get yourself a USB SD Card adapter and put your destination SD Card in that; then plug it into a USB socket. It will pop up in the Win32DiskImager panel.

Thanks for the reply. I went out and got a USB reader and have managed to get the OS transferred using my XP desktop computer and Wind32DiskImager. Just need a power supply now and I'm up and running.

I use Windows XP, too.
I take this way

(A Linux, installation is not needed)
It is good that you can also check the SD card.
