Could you post a link to the converter? some are known to work, some don't... (MCM and Adafruit have working adapters)
In the meantime, try adding or uncommenting config_hdmi_boost=n where n=6..11 and/or hdmi_force_hotplug=1 in /boot/config.txt.
Are you providing "decent" power to the pi?
