Try to use Openelec on RPi for the first time

Fri Oct 19, 2012 11:04 am

Hi,

I just got my RaspberryPi and decided to install openelec.
I think I've installed it OK because the RPi boots fine and I get the XBMC home screen.
This is where my problems starts:

1) I think my RPi isn't connecting to the internet - I have a wireless LAN running but I don't have a communication socket to connect the RPi. Is this a problem? RPi must get cable connection to the LAN?

2)I can't find my videos - I connected an external hard drive with my vids. How can I "tell" XBMC to find the hard drive and play my videos?

Can anyone help??

Thanks!

Not sure I understand but;

1) You need a wifi dongle for the R-Pi or use etherent cable

2) Under the video tab 'add source'

Not all wifi dongles are supported by XBMC distros so simply having one plugged into the USB port doesn't guarantee a wifi connection.
The other alternative is to use a wired LAN or a Wifi Ethernet bridge (a device that behaves like a LAN but communicates as a wifi device).
As for your external hard drive (providing it's externally powered) it should auto mount when connected to the USB port.
You just need to browse the file system and find the folder associated with your hard drive device (Linux has no concept of drive letters that's a Windows thing).

Thanks for your help!

Regarding the wifi dongle - you are correct I used another one and the RPi works fine now (I guess it doesn't support my other one)/

About the external hard drive - must it be with it's own power supply?
Currently I'm trying to use Seagate FreeAgent but RPi isn't recognizing it. When I plug regular disk-on-key it works just fine...

The Pi cannot provide enough power for such external HD drives. The normal way most people proceed is to use a Powered hub and connect the drive to the hub for its power needs. You can also use such a hub to power the Pi itself as long as the hub's power supply can deliver sufficient current.
