WiFi improvement pi3b

Mon Jan 22, 2018 12:39 am

Hi. My WiFi is weak where my pi is located. Is there any recommendations for a USB wifi antenna to use instead of the onboard chip? Would like to try one as other fixes haven't worked much i.e. turning the power management off. Any suggestions?

There are a number of USB dongles on the market that have full size half-wave antennas that can be rotated to optimize the signal. They all have a better signal than the 3B. Bigger is better. The Panda PAU06 is one such dongle but see any of the Pi vendors for that or others. Keep in mind that if your problem is interference from other WiFi sources, you should try changing channels in your router before going to a bigger antenna as higher gain omni-directional antennas will work just as well on interfering signals as on your signal. Small form factor WiFi dongles do not do as well as their bigger competitors.

Are other options possible?
e.g. PowerLine or Powerline to WiFi expander. Or even just a mid distance WiFi repeater.

I use PowerLine a lot, since it's easy, pretty cheap and a three port PowerLine gives me 3 Ethernet connections.
That and the Pi tends to be near a plug socket ;-)
I was sceptical before I started using it, far better than WiFi unless it needs to be mobile.

Hi. Yeah I've considered boosters etc but my WiFi is shared with next door so setup etc not as easy. I can't change wifi router settings, wps etc. Think will go with a USB adaptor and see if the signal is picked up better. Question. Will I have to disable the onboard WiFi when plug in the USB dongle?

They'll work together. But you can always disabled to see if the signal works better with it off.

You could pick up the WiFi close by with a WiFi repeater you can use them 'backwards' or at least the TPlink re210 one I have.
Connect it to the WiFi and then connect to it's Ethernet port on that. I have a TV setup like this.
You don't need access to the router.
You'd then PowerLine from that Ethernet port and use the mains as you own network.

You could probably do similar with some standard routers acting as a WiFi bridge (I think that's the terminology), or a Pi close by on it own etc..
