You are lucky that the HDD actually works on your RasPi without a powered hub, most will not. You are drawing to much current. either your main polyfuse (F3) is being pushed to hard, or your Power Supply is not able to supply enough current to run both the keyboard and the HDD at the same time.
You obviously have a version of RasPi without the USB polyfuses.
You will have to try one of these solutions.
A powered USB hub will work.
A larger (higher output rating) power supply may work. (F3 might be restricting current already)
Bridge F3 with an alligator clip and see if your RasPi now works. Warning you will have no over-current protection while you try this. This is mainly just a test as to whether F3 is limiting the current into your RasPi. I would try testing the voltage at TP1/TP2 before you try this and see what it shows. You need to see at least 4.75V.
