Assigning an IP to Respbarry Pi 2 Model B1.1

Hi All,

My setup -

Laptop : Full specification https://support.hp.com/za-en/document/c05562632
Board : Respbarry Pi 2 Model B1.1with VNC Client, Putty installed.
OS On laptop : Ubuntu 12.04.5 LTS
Kernel : 3.11.0-26-generic
Network Cable, HDMI Cable, Samsung Galaxy OnPro5 Android Mobile Charger, USB Keyboard, Mouse
Card : Fat32 Formatted and Prepared via command sudo dd if=2017-09-07-raspbian-stretch.img of=/dev/sdb1 bs=1M

Issue : Not able to see what is happening on board i.e. Raspberry Pi 2 ? Absolutely None display either on Putty nor on VNC Client.
Technically Not able to assign IP to Raspberry Pi2 Board, as instead of preparing the SD Card nothing able to do, as none of the interface is displaying over the laptop.


I am struggling with this issue since long. I will be too much thankful if someone can help here ?

Are both devices connected to a router? What are the network settings you are using on the laptop and the RPi?

No Router in between... Direct connection from rpi board to laptop via network cable...or i tried with HDMI cable too...but as everywhere Network cable/wireless is recommended,..... so i used network cable...even i bought new one...previously i tried with old one....ending the possibility of damaged cable... i buy brand new...

can you or anyone help here ?

I set ip address at eth0 and set same ip at putty as host ...protocol ssh...

kindly suggest correct setting...if you feel... I am wrong somewhere...

ip of laptop eth0 = 192.168.3.100 ...but what would be the host ip in putty or in vnc viewer...its the challenge ...i cant set...and what is is taking internally...i m not able to decide......NO ROUTE FOUND error has been displayed....so what u r saying...seems right....but how to identify the ip of rpi board ...can u kindly suggest ??

That is writing the image to a partition, not the whole card. Your RPi will not boot. Change sdb1 to sdb.

How much time have you wasted because you did not read carefully?

And as you have not mentioned a monitor, what is the HDMi cable for?

BTW it is not necessary to format a card before writing an image to it.

In putty host = 192.168.3.200 port = 22

But no display...connection time out.. even on 192.168.3.100 ..same result...

Where are you running that ifconfig command? If running it on the laptop then it is (attempting to) set the IP address of the laptop to 192/168.3.200. And if running the putty host line on the laptop, that is telling putty on the laptop to connect to the laptop.

Is your RPi actually booting. Read the "not booting" sticky, especially the section under "Check the ACT LED to determine if the Pi is booting" in the Troubleshooting part of the forum.

The post at viewtopic.php?f=29&t=173514#p1109425 tells you how to enable ssh on the RPi and how to give it a known static IP address. Give it an address on the same subnet that you are giving the laptop, eg 192.168.3.201

Connect laptop and RPi with an ethernet cable, boot the RPi and in a terminal window on the laptop type

Thanks for all help...but still I am not able to get connected ...

One thing I noticed that after setting the ip with ifconfig command..when I am connecting the rpi board...after few second laptop lost is static ip...which in turn come with no ip assigned .... when enquiring about ip of eth0 via ifconfig command.

On ssh pi@192.168.3.201 .. No route found

Below says in rpi ...to save hacking ..they have disabled its ssh ...if so then how i can enable it ??

Can anyone come with once exact setting of rpi2 putty ssh and other side/laptop network setting....?? I feel some network setting issue or ssh disabling issue stopping the display...as the ip is erasing ..it confirm the rpi is booting...as the both (green and orange ) network socket LED are blinking... and after powering up...initially for few secong green led of rpi board is blinking afterward few seconds (10-20) ..only red led is continuously glowing....

So I feel both side exact setting possibly will resolve the issue...ONe thig more I am running parallel normal wi-fi for internet surfing also...can this make an issue ??

Sounds like you are still having problems with your network settings.

I presume the computer is a Linux based OS. Post the output of ifconfig on both the computer and the RPi.

On RPI2 I am not able to perform any operation as I am not able to see its interface..in absense of which Not able to perform any operation...

the whole exercise is just to get rpi interface ...

The HDMI port on 99.9% of all laptops is output only so attempting to connect that is pointless.

It does have some network settings. It has a valid IPv6 FE80::/64 address. It has also moved some data since the counters were last reset.

OK, let me reword that. The computer does not have ipv4 network settings. The RPi is set with ipv4 network settings.

My last post contained a link about that. And about setting a static IP on the RPi.

Or a search engine will find you lots of info on enabling ssh and setting the RPI's IP from the cmdline.txt file.

AIUI he cannot. He has no means to interact with the RPi. No input and no output. That's where this whole saga started.

Have you given the RPi a known IP address? If yes, what is the IP address? Have you enabled the ssh server on the RPi? Are you able to ssh from the laptop to the RPi?

Maybe I misunderstood, but HDMI cable, mouse and keyboard indicate there is communication with the RPi.

I think you misunderstood. There has been no mention of a display on the end of the HDMI cable.
