mysql install

every time i install mysql using this command,

apt-get install mysql-server mysql-client

it successfully installs, but never asks me for a root password. After completing installing apache, and phpmyadmin when i pull up the phpmyadmin page i get

phpMyAdmin - Error
The mysqli extension is missing. Please check your PHP configuration. See our documentation for more information.

I've installed this on a pi about a year ago w/ no issues, did somthing change? I'm running on the latest version of noobs downloaded from the raspberrypi.org website

I think there's been a move away from MySQL in Stretch. Not sure whether this helps:

MariaDB 10.1 is now the default mysql server in Debian 9 "Stretch". This page provides information on this change and instructions to help with upgrading your Debian 8 "Jessie" version of MySQL or MariaDB to MariaDB 10.1 in Debian 9 "Stretch".

Can anyone help a newbee? I get the same problem: starting up phpadmin resluts in extension mysqli is missing. Tried several things, but I did not find a solution that works for me. Thanks for helping me in advance
