/dev/video0 not appeared

Fri Sep 29, 2017 12:37 pm

Hi,
I'm trying to set up a tvheadend server. For transcoding I'm setting up ffmpeg and video4linux2.
But I faced a problem. /dev/video0 not appeared.
What I did :

1. install OS from Raspbian 9/7 2017 version.
2. sudo apt-get update
3. sudo apt-get upgrade
4. sudo rpi-update
5. sudo modprobe bcm2835-v4l2
6. ls /dev/vi*
ls: cannot access /dev/video0: No such file or directory

I already read this thread viewtopic.php?t=68247
But it doesn't help on my problem. Can anyone help on this?

Many thanks.

4. sudo rpi-update

Not recommended as installs a Beta / Testing Kernel / Firmware.

The recommended way to fully update Raspbian:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
adieu

My other Computer is an Asus CS10 ChromeBit running Chrome Operating System.
HP Envy 4500 Wireless Printer supported by HPLIP software in Raspbian Buster.
Raspberry Pi Model 2B v1.1

Don't run rpi-update, it can break your system.
5. sudo modprobe bcm2835-v4l2
That modprobe only works if the camera is supported and detected. To get that working you need

Code: Select all

gpu_mem=128
start_x=1
in /boot/config.txt. Then after rebooting test that with a vcgencmd get_camera command.

When you modprobe the bcm2835-v4l2 module you should see

Code: Select all

[ 8168.309685] media: Linux media interface: v0.10
[ 8168.350580] Linux video capture interface: v2.00
[ 8168.422598] bcm2835-v4l2: scene mode selected 0, was 0
[ 8168.423260] bcm2835-v4l2: V4L2 device registered as video0 - stills mode > 1280x720
[ 8168.428877] bcm2835-v4l2: Broadcom 2835 MMAL video capture ver 0.0.2 loaded.
[ 8179.420939] bcm2835-v4l2: error 0 waiting for frame completion
in the output from a dmesg | less command (timestamps will be different).

If the camera isn't supported you'll get

Code: Select all

[338314.067319] media: Linux media interface: v0.10
[338314.117788] Linux video capture interface: v2.00
but nothing else.

If you want to load the video0 driver at every boot add a line in /etc/modules and the system will "modprobe" it for you automatically.

Really thank you all. I'm not able to access my raspi at this present. I'm on a trip. I'll try again once I'm back home.

I think I am seeing the same thing and we might have a kernel regression. My post is here: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=197025.
