Tvheadend is not available on debian/raspbian repos, you have to go to the tvheadend project page and follow their instructions to install their repo and then the server.

Did you enabled the extra codecs like explained in the first post ? And make sure you are using the default settings in Kodi of mmal enabled and omxplayer disabled. If after that they still don't work, it is mostly likely something about your TVHeadend server configuration, it is better to ask in their foruns.

I have just installed kodi 17.4 on a fresh new raspbian stretch, but with a newly created user, not the default pi. It is not working.

I guess it could be due to groups to which the user must belong. It was mentioned, but it does not seem to have been posted here. Do we have to assume that groups are the same in previous versions?

Hello,
What am I missing to get 17.4 out of full screen on Stretch? Gone are the 2 options under Display mode for Window or Full, only resolution. Backslash does nothing. BTW, I'm used to running Kodi on Ubuntu with AMD64 so maybe this option is disabled for the ARM to conserve resources?

You can't go to windowed mode in Kodi on the Raspberry Pi, either on Raspbian Stretch, Jessie or even LibreELEC and such, it is currently a limitation on the Raspberry Pi.

Kodi 17.5 is now available on Stretch.
Make sure you do a upgrade/dist-upgrade to get the latest kernel/firmware, otherwise hevc videos will crash Kodi.

I've installed all the visualizations packages via apt (without -dev), but I can't see them in Kodi. Any idea why?

Restart Kodi, go to Add-ons -> My add-ons -> Look and Feel -> Visualization and enable them.

All right, now I can choose them. But I don't see any visualization. Is it some known bug?

No. Visualizations are only for when you play music:

If you want autostart Kodi at boot but also keep the Desktop Environment on the background, just edit the file ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart and add a line in the end with:

Code: Select all

@kodi
This doesn't work for me, as well as other options to start kodi from code. I can start kodi from terminal just typing "kodi" or running a shell script with "kodi" in it. But when I try to use that shell script to run kodi automatically at startup or from TV remote (both via CEC and lirc), it do not starting. What can be the reason of such behaviour?

If it starts from terminal, I see no reason for it not auto-starting, if correctly done. Those 2 options on the first post were obviously tested on a clean Raspbian Stretch install and confirmed to be working, but the option 2, was only tested with the default user "pi". Are you trying to run Kodi as a different user ? If so, there are also instructions on the first post on how to configure Kodi to run as a different user. Also note that ~/.config/lxsession/LXDE-pi/autostart is not a shell script but a LXDE configuration file for the respective user running it. Use that one and not the global one in /etc. If after all of this it still doesn't work, please post what you have in that file and also in ~/.cache/lxsession/LXDE-pi/run.log.

Running it from a TV remote with CEC or Lirc is a more complex thing, but should be doable also.

Great guide indeed and many thanks for it. I just had issues with the autostart by copying yours stuff.

Solved by:

Code: Select all

sudo nano /lib/systemd/system/kodi.service
and then paste

Code: Select all

[Unit]
Description = Kodi Media Center
After = remote-fs.target network-online.target
Wants = network-online.target

[Service]
User = pi
Group = pi
Type = simple
ExecStart = /usr/bin/kodi
Restart = on-abort
RestartSec = 5

[Install]
WantedBy = multi-user.target

Hi,

I've followed your guide, and it works great, but I'd like to execute kodi only if HDMI cable is connected at boot. This way, I can power RPi and use it like a headless server, and only execute kodi if I want to plug it into the tv.

How can I do that? I've searched about tvservice but I don't really know how to relate it with the boot service.

Thank you
